SOUTH ORANGE, N.J - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team (0-1) would fall in its season opener vs. Seton Hall (1-0) on Tuesday by a final score of 88-39. The Peacocks would have 12 players enter the game, with all of the newcomers earning minutes.
The 2025-26 season would begin for SPU at the Walsh Gymnasium on the campus of Seton Hall.
De'Naya Rippey was the star for the Peacocks, scoring 16 points along with eight rebounds and a steal in 30 minutes of play.
Despite the solid performance from Rippey, the Peacocks struggled to score especially from three point range. Finishing shooting 15-56 from the field and 4-28 from three point land.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: The Peacocks started strong with a huge 3-pointer from
Laila Grant and the followed up by a
De'Naya Rippey and a
Carys Roy block. The Pirates would go on a 22-0 run before Rippey and
Louella Allana would cash in on a triple and mid-range jumpers. Ultimately, it was the Pirates streaky shooting and tough defense that would give them a 25-8 lead over the Peacocks at the end of the first quarter. Saint Peter's would shoot 21% from the floor in the first compared to the Pirates shooting 53%.
SECOND QUARTER: Similar to the first,
Laila Grant would get the scoring going for the Peacocks, this time on a pair of free throws. After a steal from
Eszter Turi, the Pirates would start the second a perfect three for three on field goals. Coming out of a media timeout,
Jineen Ayyash would land a huge 3-pointer and would be followed by a block from Turi.
Jayshlynn Vega and Rippey would keep the scoring going for the Peacocks as Vega would knock down a great stepback jumper and Rippey would convert on a tough layup. The Pirates would maintain a steady lead in the first half. The Peacocks' struggles would continue to end the quarter by committing nine turnovers. The first half score would be 50-19 Pirates.
THIRD QUARTER: The Peacocks would start slow in the third but would eventually ramp it up thanks to Rippey earning some tough baskets in the paint.
Layla Laws would add to the scoring for the Peacocks with a score down low. With a media timeout around six minutes in, the Peacocks would be down 62-23. Coming out of the timeout, Turi would earn her second steal and Rippey would earn second chance points for the Peacocks. The struggles shooting continued for the Peacocks as the third quarter would end 71-25 Pirates.
FOURTH QUARTER: The Pirates defense held the Peacocks to a scoreless first three minutes. The Peacocks struggled as they would go 0-5 on their first five shot attempts. Coming out of a media timeout, Rippey would earn a tough basket and draw the and-one. Laws also added to the scoring by cashing in on a baseline jumper and a layup in the post. Rippey would continue to earn points at the free throw line.
Sierra Patricio would contribute on the defensive end by causing a huge turnover and knocking down a triple on the other end. However, it still wasn't enough as the Peacocks would ultimately fall to the Pirates 88-39.

Saint Peter's now holds a 4-18 all time record against Seton Hall. The newcomers for the Peacocks would combine for seven points, seven rebounds, and one assist.
