NEWARK, N.J. - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team was defeated on Wednesday, Nov. 19 to NJIT 33-81 at the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Event Center. The Peacocks were led on the offensive end by a combined 12 points from
Carys Roy and
Jayshlynn Vega, with Roy also leading the Peacocks on the glass with eight rebounds as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
FIRST QUARTER: The first basket for the Peacocks came from a well designed play for
Eszter Turi to convert down low. Turi added to her total by converting on a free throw late in the quarter. The Highlanders continued to attack the Peacocks on fast break opportunities making the score 11-3 with four minutes left. The aggressive nature of the Highlanders proved to be ineffective as the Peacocks scored at the free throw line from Roy. With around two minutes left in the first, the Highlanders found themselves up 13-5 over the Peacocks. The Peacocks battled the rest of the quarter playing strong defense, not allowing a Highlanders basket in the final four minutes, leaving the score after one 5-14.Â
SECOND QUARTER:
Laila Grant got the scoring going for the Peacocks, knocking down a huge 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down. Halfway through the second, the Peacocks found themselves down 8-24 after a pair of baskets scored on fast breaks. Coming out of the timeout, the quick hands of the Peacocks continued to play a factor against the Highlanders as Vega provided a spark off the bench, forcing the seventh turnover against the Highlanders and converting on a pair of baskets in the paint.
Reilly Sunday earned her first basket back from injury, converting on a mid range jumper. At the end of the first half, the Peacocks found themselves down 14-36.Â
THIRD QUARTER: Similar to the second quarter, Grant started the half with a layup inside for the Peacocks.
De'Naya Rippey added to the scoring by also converting on a hard earned basket.
Louella Allana scored her first basket after a great crossover move and a baseline layup. Roy continued to chip away at the lead, scoring on a pair of free throws. Allana continued to work well in one on one situations, once again scoring inside. The Peacocks kept on fighting hard, with a 24-55 score going into the media timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Turi cashed in on a foul line jumper, but the Highlanders continued to grow their lead with a barrage of jumpers. With about 30 seconds left in the third quarter, Rippey drove to the lane and converted on a tough and-1, nailing the free throw in the process. The Highlanders responded on the other end, scoring a buzzer beating layup, ending the quarter with a score of 64-29.Â
FOURTH QUARTER: Both teams struggled to begin the fourth quarter, as tough defense prevented the first basket until three minutes in. The Peacock's first basket came after a foul line jumper from Roy. Going into the media timeout, the Peacocks would find themselves down 31-71 against the Highlanders. Turi and Vega both made impacts out of the timeout with a block from Turi and then a fastbreak layup from Vega. Ultimately, thanks to a strong shooting performance from the Highlanders, the Peacocks ended the contest in defeat by a final score of 33-81.Â
UP NEXT: The Peacocks end a four game road streak and will return home on Tuesday, Nov. 25 against Lehman at Run Baby Run Arena for Women's Basketball's home opener.Â
