Peacocks Fall to Quinnipiac as Rippey Records First Double-Double

HAMDEN, CT- The Saint Peter's women's basketball team came up short against the Quinnipiac Bobcats, falling 54-39 on Thursday night. Freshman De'Naya Rippey shined with her first career double-double, recording 12 points and 10 rebounds.
 

WHAT HAPPENED

Redshirt sophomore Nikola Zdenkova set the tone by opening the scoring with a three-pointer.  Graduate guard Maya Hyacienth followed up with another shot from beyond the arc.  Freshman De'Naya Rippey contributed with a mid-range jumper, and sophomore Fatmata Janneh added a three-pointer of her own. At the end of the first quarter, the Bobcats held a narrow 11-10 lead.

To get the Peacocks rolling in the second half,  Fatmata Janneh knocked down a jumper, followed by a three-pointer from De'Naya Rippey. Freshman Linda Amaning made a strong drive to the basket, while Janneh added another jumper. Graduate guard Laila Grant hit a three-pointer, while Rippey capped the run with a drive to the basket. The Peacocks fought back to take the lead 24-23 at halftime.

Laila Grant kicked off the third quarter with a smooth jumper, setting the tone for the Bobcats. Fatmata Janneh followed up with a clutch three-pointer from beyond the arc. By the end of the third quarter, the Bobcats held a 36-29 lead.

In the Peacocks final stretch, Nikola Zdenkova knocked down a three-pointer. De'Naya Rippey drove to the basket but the Bobcats answered with a drive to the basket.

 

STATISTICS

Fatmata Janneh scored 9 points, going 4-of-15 from the field (26.7%) and 1-of-5 from beyond the arc (20.0%). Janneh was a force on the glass, pulling down 9 total rebounds. She contributed 2 offensive rebounds, providing second-chance opportunities, and dominated the defensive boards with 7 rebounds.

Rippey led her team with 12 points, shooting 4-of-10 from the field (40.0%) and an impressive 50.0% from beyond the arc (1-of-2). Rippey was a force on the boards, securing a double-double with 10 rebounds. Her 5 offensive rebounds provided valuable second-chance opportunities. 

Nikola Zdenkova scored all 6 of her points from three-point range.

 

UP NEXT

The Peacocks return home as they continue their conference play against Niagara. The match-up between the Purple Eagles and Peacocks will be Thursday Jan. 9th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
