Peacocks Battle Hard but Fall Short Against Marist on Thursday Morning

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- The Saint Peter's women's basketball team was defeated by Marist with a final score of 50-30. Fatmata Janneh delivered a standout performance, recording her seventh double-double of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Red Foxes jumped to a quick 6-2 lead as the Peacocks struggled offensively. Freshman De'Naya Rippey knocked down a three-pointer, while sophomore Fatmata Janneh followed up with a shot from downtown. Janneh drove to the basket but it wasn't enough to close the gap. At the end of the first quarter the score was 16-11 Marist.

Out of the first quarter break, graduate Laila Grant secured a steal, which set up a fastbreak opportunity for freshman Linda Amaning. Amaning drove to the basket and converted a contested layup while drawing a foul. An SPU steal by Fatmata Janneh led to a transition layup by Nikola Zdenkova, cutting the deficit to 19-25. Over the next couple of minutes, Marist extended its lead to seven at 25-19. Marist closed the first half with a lead of 25-19.

Marist held the Peacocks scoreless for over 5 minutes. Janneh showcased her versatility in the third quarter, sinking a deep three-pointer, knocking down a pair of free throws, and driving to the basket for a strong finish. Despite her efforts, Saint Peter's couldn't overcome Marist's momentum, as the Red Foxes extended their lead to 36-26 by the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Saint Peter's continued to fight hard, with Fatmata Janneh making a strong offensive play at 8:10, scoring a layup to bring her total to a team-leading 17 points. Janneh secured several key rebounds and Linda Amaning added a crucial steal. Freshman Iyanna Cotten contributed a turnaround jumper at, keeping Saint Peter's in the game. In the final seconds, Lara Aguzzi grabbed a defensive rebound after a missed jumper by Marist.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Fatmata Janneh delivered an impressive performance for Saint Peter's, showcasing her all-around skills on the court. Logging 33 minutes, Janneh tallied 17 points, shooting 5-for-15 (33.3%) from the field and an efficient 2-for-4 (50.0%) from beyond the arc. She was particularly effective at the free-throw line, converting 5-of-6 attempts for an 83.3% success rate. Dominating the boards, Janneh pulled down  15 rebounds, with 14 on the defensive end, and added 1 assist and 2 steals to her stat line.

The Peacocks return home to Run Baby Run Arena, where the squad takes on Sacred Heart University. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
