Women's Volleyball Splits on Day Two of the Friar Classic

Colon and Labrie Earn All-Tournament Honors

Providence, RI – The Saint Peter's volleyball team competed in a doubleheader at the Friar Classic on Saturday, splitting the day with a 3-0 loss to Stonehill College (3-6) and a sweep of Columbia University (2-4). With these results, the Peacocks stand 2-2 on the season.

Freshman Lagean Colon and sophomore Maliyah Labrie were both named to the Friar Invitational All-Tournament Team for their outstanding performances across all three matches this weekend.

Match Recap: Saint Peter's vs Stonehill
 

  • Sophomore Maliyah Labrie opened the first set with a kill, but it wasn't enough to shift momentum in favor of the Peacocks. Stonehill quickly gained the lead and maintained it until Saint Peter's rallied to tie the score at 22-22. However, the Skyhawks secured the final three points to close the set, 25-22.

  • Set two followed a similar pattern. Saint Peter's started strong, taking the initial points, but Stonehill regained control. The Peacocks fought back once again to tie the score at 22-22, but Stonehill clinched the set with a couple of service aces, winning 25-22.

  • In the third set, the Peacocks came out aggressively, holding a four-point lead midway through the set. Despite their efforts, Stonehill rallied to tie the score at 20-20, winning five of the last seven points to take the set 25-22 and sweep the match.

    Inside the Numbers:

  • Labrie led all players with 12 kills.

  • Karolina Rodriguez recorded four kills on eight attempts, hitting at a solid .375. She also contributed defensively with four block assists.

  • Danielle Caligiuri had 25 assists.
 

Match Recap: Saint Peter's vs Columbia

The Saint Peter's volleyball team secured a decisive 3-0 sweep over Columbia University taking sets 25-23, 25-20, and 25-17. 

Columbia came out strong, opening the set with a service ace and two consecutive kills. Saint Peter's quickly responded with back-to-back kills from Elena Bilhartz and Penelope Rivera, but Columbia kept their distance, maintaining a lead that never extended beyond four points.

Late in the set, a crucial kill by Maliyah Labrie tied the score at 23-23, sparking a momentum shift. Saint Peter's capitalized on two Columbia attack errors to take the final two points, securing a 25-23 comeback victory and the first set.

In set two, Columbia started strong, taking an early lead, but Saint Peter's quickly turned the tide. The Peacocks seized the lead and maintained control for the rest of the set. Despite a Columbia timeout aimed at disrupting the Peacocks' defensive rhythm, Saint Peter's held firm.

After the Lions managed a kill, Labrie immediately responded. Both teams exchanged kills in a back-and-forth battle, but Saint Peter's never relinquished their lead, keeping at least a three-point cushion throughout the remainder of the set.

A decisive kill from Rivera and a service ace by Valeria Pagan Munoz sealed the set for the Peacocks, 25-20.

Saint Peter's came out strong again in set three, quickly establishing an early lead and creating significant distance from Columbia. The Peacocks pushed their advantage to eight points, forcing Columbia to call two timeouts in an attempt to regroup.

Although both teams traded kills, Saint Peter's consistently maintained control, stretching their lead to as much as 11 points. Columbia never came within five points of the Peacocks, allowing Saint Peter's to cruise to a dominant 25-17 victory and close out the match.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Danielle Caligiuri had 23 assists.

  • Labrie led all players with 10 kills, adding 14.5 points and hitting .455.

  • Pagan Munoz contributed 9 kills, hitting at a solid .429.

    Up Next:

    The Saint Peter's Peacocks are back in action on Tuesday September 17th, as they head to New Britain, CT to face Central Connecticut State University. Match is set for 6PM.
