Leonard’s Three-Point play lifts Peacocks to thrilling overtime victory over Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Saint Peter's Women's Basketball  sophomore guard Jada Leonard converted a three-point play in the waning seconds of overtime to help the Peacocks secure their fourth conference win against Marist on Saturday by a score of 58-57.  Freshman forward Fatmata Janneh led the way with 24 points, while graduate student Mikia Keith tacked on 10 points. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freshman forward Fatmata Janneh got the Peacocks rolling early in the first quarter by scoring in the paint. Graduate guard Mikia Keith shot from downtown, while following up with a lay-up. The Peacocks held the Red Foxes scoreless for the first eight minutes of the first quarter. 

At the start of the second quarter, graduate guard Maya Hyacienth had a pair of three-pointers. Janneh connected a pair of free throws, followed by a driving lay-up. Janneh finished the first half with a total of 12 points. The Peacocks took the lead 31-21 heading into halftime. 

Sophomore guard Rachel Kuhl kicked off the second half by connecting beyond the three-point arc. Hyacienth tacked on three points on the board early in the third quarter. Leonard scored in the paint, while Janneh followed up with a hook shot. 

During the final quarter, Janneh scored in the paint and shot from the free-throw line to secure the Peacocks lead. Freshman center Carys Roy had a steal and scored a jumper. Marist rallied late in regulation to pull even at 48 and force overtime. 

Roy had a steal that allowed Janneh to have a pair of lay-ups giving the Peacocks the lead early in overtime. With Saint Peter's trailing by two with 16 seconds left in overtime, Leonard led the Peacocks to victory with a layup to knot the score at 57. She connected on the ensuing go-ahead free throw to complete  the three-point play, giving Saint Peter's a one-point victory and a season series sweep over the Red Foxes. 

Janneh led the squad with 24 points and 15 rebounds securing her ninth double-double this season. Keith tacked on 10 points and shot 3-of-8 from the floor. The squad had 44 rebounds and 15 steals. 

NEXT UP

Next up, the Peacocks return home to Run Baby Run Arena to host the Fairfield Stags on Thursday, March 7th. This is the Peacocks senior night where the program will honor its three seniors. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm.
