JERSEY CITY, NJ. - The Saint Peter's Men's Basketball team (8-5, 4-0 MAAC) won its fifth game in a row over Mount St. Mary's 70-64 Sunday at Run Baby Run Arena. The Peacocks 4-0 start to MAAC play is their best start to conference play since the 2003-04 season.
Corey Washington led the Peacocks with 25 points. The SPU sophomore shot an efficient 10/16 from the field (62%) and 2/4 from three-point range (50%). This was the second straight game Washington has dropped 20+ points. Washington made a variety of shots from the paint, mid range, and from outside the arc.
SPU senior Stephon Roberts scored a season-high 11 points. Roberts didn't miss a single shot attempt. Roberts went 3-3 from the field, 4-4 from the line and 1-1 from three-point range. Additionally, Latrell Reid dropped 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Saint Peter's outrebounded Mount St. Mary's 35-27 in the game and scored 20 points off turnovers.
In the first half, the Mountaineers shot 11-21 (50%) from the field and 4-8 (50%) from three-point range. Washington and Roberts closed out a tight first half for the Peacocks. Down 25-19, Roberts hit a jump shot in the paint followed by a three-pointer from Washington. Roberts banked in a three-pointer as time expired in the first half and the Peacocks trailed 31-28 at halftime.
The Peacocks regained the lead at the 14:47 mark in the second half and never trailed for the rest of the game. MSM cut the score to 48-46 with 8:40 left. Saint Peter's responded with a 12-2 run. Mouhamed Sow knocked down a jump shot followed by Marcus Randolph who completed a fast break with a layup. During the run, Washington scored six straight points for the Peacocks. Washington hit a mid-range jump shot, layup on a fast break, and tacked on a free throw. A deep three-pointer from Brent Bland extended Saint Peter's lead to 60-48 with 5:32 left.
The Peacocks held off a late comeback attempt from the Mountaineers. With seven seconds left in the game Reid hit a pair of free throws which closed out the game at 70-64.
Next, the Peacocks travel to Riverdale, NY and face Manhattan (4-9, 1-3 MAAC) on Sunday, Jan. 14. The game tips-off at 2 PM.
