NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.- Saint Peter's University baseball junior
Jeff Massicotte (Meriden, Conn.) homered and drove in the seven runs as the Peacocks fell in their series opener to Iona University 14-12 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.
The Peacocks fall to 2-25 overall and 1-6 in the MAAC, while the Gaels improve to 5-21 and 1-3 in conference play.
Saint Peter's got on the board first as senior
Anthony Abbatine (Warwick, N.Y.) scored on an Iona error in the first inning. The Gaels rallied back with two runs in the first and one in the second to take a 3-1 lead.
The Peacocks added runs in the third as junior
Johnathan Behm (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored on an error, while Massicotte blasted a two-run homerun. Junior
Michael Cardone (Denville, N.J.) singled in a run in the fourth to put Saint Peter's back in front 5-3.
Iona got a run back in the fourth, but the Peacocks added to their lead in the sixth as Massicotte singled in a pair runs to extend their lead to 7-4.
The Gaels battled back with three runs in their half of the sixth to pull even at 7-7. Behm lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh, while Massicotte added to his big day with a three-run single to give the Peacocks an 11-7 advantage.
Iona closed to gap to 11-10 with a three-run seventh but Behm drew a bases loaded walk in the eighth to push their lead to 12-10. The Gaels rallied in the eighth with four runs and held off the Peacocks in the ninth.
The Peacocks and the Gaels play game two of their three game series on Friday, April 7 at 3 pm in New Rochelle, New York.
