ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team lost to Quinnipiac 63-42 Wednesday afternoon at the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in quarterfinals of the MAAC Tournament. Graduate guard Kendrea Williams led the way for the Peacocks, scoring 16 points and grabbing two rebounds.
The Peacocks jumped on the Bobcats early in the contest. After Williams made her first basket to tie the game at two, senior guard Nickelle O'Neil was able to make a jumper in the paint to put the Peacocks up. Williams would add on a fast break layup with 4:24 on the clock to put the Peacocks up six. Williams and O'Neil made three pointers on back to back possessions with less than three minutes to go in the quarter to put Saint Peter's up 18-4. They would lead 18-10 at the end of the quarter.
Saint Peter's allowed Quinnipiac within two to open up the second quarter before sophomore forward Sky Castro made a mid range jumper. Neither team was able to score for the next three minutes. Williams made another three to break that drought and put the Peacocks up seven with 4:57 left on the clock. Quinnipiac went on a 10-0 run to close out the half and led 26-23 at the break.
Quinnipiac continued their momentum into the second half, as they were able to tack on the first five points to go on a 15-0 extended run. O'Neil broke the drought with a mid-range jumper. The Peacocks continued to fight and press Quinnipiac, and got within four points after Williams made her third three of the game to make the score 37-33 in favor of Quinnipiac. The score after three quarters was 45-35 in favor of the Bobcats.
It was a struggle for Saint Peter's in the final quarter of the game, as they could not get any shots to fall. Their first field goal of the quarter was at the four minute mark by freshman forward Kaila Dawkins. Freshman guard Amaris Mills made the only other field goal in the quarter, as the Peacocks fell to Quinnipiac.
