JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team beat Siena 70-59 Thursday night at Run Baby Run Arena. Graduate guard Kendrea Williams led the team in scoring with 19 points. She also recorded two assists and a block.
The Peacocks were again on the wrong side of things again to open things up. The Saints opened on a 8-4 run over the course of the first five minutes, forcing head coach Marc Mitchell to call a timeout. After the timeout, senior guard Tyara McQueen came off of the bench and provided an instant impact, draining a three-pointer and a long mid-range jumper to put the Peacocks in front. Senior guard Kourtney Crane followed McQueen's buckets with a three of her own to put the Peacocks up four. They would lead at the end of the first, 22-14.
The Peacocks' first five baskets came from five different scorers, which included sophomore guard Rachel Kuhl, senior guard Nickelle O'Neil, Crane, Williams, and a three from McQueen. McQueen's three gave the Peacocks a 13 point lead, which was their largest lead of the game. Siena closed the half on a 15-3 run to get back into the game. Saint Peter's led 37-36 at the half.
Saint Peter's found the momentum they had in the first quarter and came out on fire in the third. Williams scored five points in seventeen seconds midway through the quarter to put the Peacocks up six. Kuhl came in and hit a three with 3:39 left in the third quarter and put the Peacocks up to seven. Saint Peter's pushed their lead to eleven after Williams hit a three with under a minute left in the third. The team would lead by 12 at the end of the frame.
Saint Peter's led by ten or more points throughout the fourth quarter, never letting Siena get back into the game. Junior center Kassondra Brown, who recorded another double-double, had a huge putback with 3:37 left in the game and got fouled, as she extended the teams lead to 13. Kuhl hit a nice step back jumper to put the Peacocks up 15 with just over a minute left in the fourth to close out the game.
