JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team defeated Iona by a score of 54-53 Saturday afternoon in Run Baby Run Arena. Junior center Kassondra Brown led the team with 20 points and also grabbed nine rebounds.
Points were hard to come by throughout the first half. The teams combined to score 20 points in the quarter, with the Peacocks holding a 12-8 lead at the end of the quarter. Brown scored the first five points for the Peacocks, including making her first three pointer of the season. Senior guard Kourtney Crane picked up the scoring next, as she scored five straight with a three as well.
Both teams remained close throughout the second half. The Peacocks were able to hit back-to-back threes, courtesy of Crane and graduate guard Kendrea Willams, to push the score to 20-14 with 4:08 to go in the quarter. Iona went on a 7-0 run from that point on, until senior guard Binta Salawu hit a three at the buzzer to put the Peacocks in front by two at the half, 23-21.
Brown kicked off the second half with her second three pointer of the game. She would end up totaling nine points in the quarter. Senior guard Kourtney Crane also hit another three in the quarter, which at the time extended the Peacocks lead to five with 3:14 to go in the quarter. They trailed by one heading into the fourth.
Saint Peter's trailed by four with 9:38 left to go in the fourth, which was their largest deficit of the game. Brown went on a mini 5-0 run to put the Peacocks ahead, and they never looked back. Graduate guard Kendrea Williams scored a crucial bucket with 4:30 left in the game, as she grabbed a rebound off of a jumper from Brown, and was able to score. The Peacocks led 54-51 with six seconds left on the clock with Iona having the possession, but the Gaels decided to go for two rather than three, and the time expired on a made basket, handing the Peacocks their second straight game.
