First Serve
  • After not competing at all during the 2020-21 academic year, the Saint Peter's University women's volleyball team will begin its 37th campaign this weekend in Dover, Delaware at the Delaware State Hornet Invite.
  • The Peacocks will compete in the multi-team event on Friday and Saturday, August 27 and 28, with matchups against Delaware St. (DSU), St. Francis Brooklyn (SFC), and Bucknell.
  • SPU will launch its season participating in a multi-team tournament for the sixth time in the past seven years.
  • The squad seeks their first win in a season opening invitational since the 2018 tilt, when that team knocked off NJIT in the final game of the Bucknell Invitational.
  • The team will look to complete the invite with a winning record since going 2-1 at the 2010 Terrier Classic when they defeated host St. Francis Brooklyn twice during the tournament.

Things to Know Before the DSU Hornet Invite
Series History vs. the Field
  • Saint Peter's is a combined 15-22 all-time against its Delaware State Hornet Invite opponents, holding a winning record over two thirds of the field.
  • Versus invitational host, DSU, the Peacocks boast a 5-4 overall record dating back to 1995 and have won back-to-back meetings in 2014 (3-1) and 2019 (3-2).
  • Although this will be the 10th meeting between the sides, the Peacocks have only visited Dover, Delaware once to face the Hornets, resulting in a 3-0 sweep for SPU back on Sept. 27, 2005.
  • Despite dropping five straight to SFC, SPU holds a slim 10-9 series edge since first meeting back in 1984.
  • In 2019, the Peacocks and Terriers met twice, with the Terriers taking both meetings over the Peacocks.
  • SPU's last victory over SFC occurred during the 2013 season.
  • When SPU lines up across from Bucknell, it will be the 10th all-time meeting between the two programs.
  • The Peacocks have never defeated the Bison, trailing the series 0-9 overall.
  • They last met in 2019 at the CCSU Invitational, with Bucknell winning 3-1.

At Long Last
  • After the 2020 traditional fall season was postponed due to the COVID-19 global pandemic and the women's volleyball team's 2020-21 spring season was canceled in accordance with COVID-19 safety protocols, the Peacocks will finally take the court again for the first time since Nov. 16, 2019.
  • When the Peacocks take the court on Aug. 27, 2021, it will have been exactly 650 days since the team last competed -- or one year, nine months, and 11 days -- the program's longest layoff between matches since the team's inception in 1984.

Key Returners
  • Joe Chojnacki begins his third overall season with a mixture of veteran leadership and inexperienced underclassmen.
  • The Peacocks return 10 letter winners from last season's team, including the lineup's top-three point earners since 2018 and the team's primary setter.
  • The squad brings back the senior trio of Alanis Alvarado, Angeleyshka Curbelo, and Stephanie Rivera, which combined to score 928 points and 806 kills in 2019 -- 66.5 percent of the team's total points and 73 percent of the team's kills, respectively.
  • Graduate setter, Wildalys Soto, also returns to the lineup for an extra season.
  • Soto led the unit in assists during 2019 and enters her graduate year ranked fifth in career assists on the program's all-time leaderboard.

  • First serve is set for 6pm in Newark.
