JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University women's soccer team fell to Iona on Friday afternoon, dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to the Gaels at Caven Point Field in Jersey City. The Peacocks held a 2-0 lead for the majority of regulation off goals from juniors
Jessica Auvil and
Fatou Doucoure, but a late push from the Gaels tied the game at 2-2 in the waning moments of Friday's match. An Iona goal from a corner in the 95th minute would then propel the visitors to a 3-2 win.
Game Notes:
- The Peacocks struck early on in the match against the Gaels, as Auvil received a double assist from classmate Stephanie Radakovic and sophomore Madison Greenberg, sending a shot into the back of the Iona net at the 7' mark to take a 1-0 lead.
- Saint Peter's made a strong defensive stand over the next 20 minutes, denying five shot attempts from the Iona attack to keep the opposition scoreless.
- In the 31st minute, Doucoure deftly handled a deflection off an Iona defender to net the second Saint Peter's goal of the day, increasing the team's lead to 2-0.
- The Gaels began the first half with a shot on goal in the 49th minute, but senior goalkeeper Victoria Scarratt notched her second save of the day to maintain the two-point advantage.
- Saint Peter's then rattled off three shots on goal in the next four minutes but all attempts were brought up short by the Iona keeper.
- Playing with only one reserve player, the Peacocks remained on the defensive for a large part of the remaining 33 minutes of regulation.
- In the 80th minute, the visitors were able to score their first goal of the day on a penalty kick following a hand-ball called on the Peacocks in their own box.
- Then, in the 90th minute, the Gaels capitalized on a free kick from about 30 yards out, tallying their second goal to send the game into extra minutes.
- The final blow of the contest would come off an Iona corner kick in the 95th minute that found its mark unassisted, which gave the Gaels the 3-2 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- Both Auvil's and Doucoure's goals mark career-firsts for the pair of juniors, while Greenberg's helper in the 7th minute is the sophomore's first assist of her career.
- Radakovic has now recorded an assist in each of the Peacocks' past two games.
- Doucoure and sophomore Jazmin Brown led the team in shot attempts on the day with four shots each, including three shots on goal apiece.
- Iona was able to get off 15 shots in the exchange, while Saint Peter's totaled 10 shots on the day.
