Opening Word:
  • The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team heads to Atlantic City this week for a quarterfinal matchup against Iona in the 2021 MAAC Women's Basketball Championship.
  • The contest is set to get underway at noon on Thursday, March 11.
  • The Peacocks recently closed out their regular season with their most crucial win of the year, defeating MAAC No. 1 Marist 58-51 in Poughkeepsie on March 5.
  • The victory over the Red Foxes boosted the Peacocks to the three-seed in the upcoming championship, which marks the program's best postseason ranking since it finished as the two-seed in 2001-02.
  • The Peacocks concluded the regular season with an overall record of 11-14 and a winning conference record of 10-9; the team's best finish since 2008-09 when the Peacocks went 13-15 (10-8) through the regular season.
History with the Gaels:
  • Saint Peter's holds an overall record of 61-31 over their MAAC foes from New Rochelle.
  • The Peacocks started off conference play against the Gaels this year, sweeping the series at Iona on Dec. 12-13.
  • The initial matchup between the two sides ended in a 63-54 victory for the blue and white, while the rematch proved to be a low-scoring affair for both sides, as Saint Peter's secured a 45-38 win.
  • The two squads have met in the MAAC championship six times, with the Peacocks holding a 4-2 advantage. However, Iona won the last postseason matchup on March 6, 2009 by a score of 63-57.
Peacocks in the Postseason:
  • Saint Peter's is one of the conference's most successful teams since the MAAC's inception in 1980-81, as the program holds nine MAAC Championship titles.
  • The Peacocks are 40-30 in the history of the MAAC Championship.
  • The team's last win in the postseason came in 2015, when the Peacocks defeated hOURglass rival Rider in the first round by a 62-54 margin.
  • Saint Peter's will be seeking its first quarterfinal victory in the postseason since its 68-65 victory over Manhattan in 2008.
Coach of the Year:
  • In just his third season at the helm for the Peacocks, head coach Marc Mitchell enters this week's championship as the 2021 "The Rock" MAAC Co-Coach of the Year.
  • The award comes following the team's best finish to the regular season in over a decade and a No. 3 seed in this year's championship, marking the program's best postseason finish in 19 years.
  • Additionally, Mitchell is only the second coach in Saint Peter's women's basketball history to earn the distinction, and the first to do so since 1999 when Saint Peter's hall of fame coach Mike Granelli won his final Coach of the Year award.
  • Mitchell stands as the first Black man to receive MAAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year recognition, joining Iona head coach Billi Chambers as the only other Black head coach to earn the award in conference history.
All-MAAC Representation:
  • Redshirt-seniors Taiah Thornton and Kendrea Williams, along with freshman Ajia James, each earned All-MAAC honors following the conclusion of the regular season.
  • Thornton finished with a selection to the 2021 Women's Basketball All-MAAC First Team, making her the first Peacock to achieve the honor since Tania Kennedy in 2008.
  • Williams earned her first career MAAC distinction this season after being voted to the All-MAAC Third Team.
  • James rounds the group out as a unanimous selection to this season's MAAC All-Rookie Team after a breakout campaign in her freshman year.
MAAC Championship:
  • The winner of Thursday's game will move on to the semifinal round on Friday, March 12 and will play the winner of No. 2 Quinnipiac vs No. 7 Rider in a 1:30 p.m. tip-off.
