JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Freshman
Lily Barnhill turned in a career-best 12 kills while three Peacocks registered three aces apiece to help propel the Saint Peter's University women's volleyball team to a straight-sets victory over Manhattan on Sunday at Run Baby Run Arena.
Recording their first win in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this season, the Peacocks roared out of the gate with easily their most dominant set of the season in the opening frame on Sunday, as the hosts blitzed Manhattan as part of a 25-8 win in the first set. Saint Peter's had double-digit leads of 12-1, 14-3, 15-5 and 16-6 before winning the final six points to win the stanza going away.
A tighter second set ensued, one that was tied at several points (11, 13, 15, 17, 19) before the Peacocks took a 23-20 lead. The Jaspers got within one, but a kill from senior
Angeleyshka Curbelo followed by an errant Manhattan attack gave the Peacocks an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the match.
Saint Peter's secured the sweep after closing out the third set with several impressive scoring runs that were too much for Manhattan to respond to. A string of six rallies in seven tries gave the Peacocks a 14-9 lead, then a 5-1 run put the hosts in front, 19-11. The Jaspers would get as close as five points the rest of the way before a match-clinching kill from senior
Jeysi Montero wrapped up the win.
