The Saint Peter's University women's volleyball team plays in its final home contests of the season Saturday and Sunday as they take on Niagara Saturday and Canisius Sunday. The Peacocks will honor the senior class of 2022 prior to Sunday's contest against Canisius.
Five Things to Know
- Saint Peter's comes into the contest coming off an impressive 3-0 sweep of Manhttan last Sunday, taking down the Jaspers 25-8, 25-22, 25-19.
- Freshman Lily Barnhill led the way in the sweep with a career-high 12 kills and seven digs while hitting .292. Barnhill now has produced double-digit kills four times this season and ranks third on the team with 2.02 kills per set on the year.
- The weekend was full of highlights for senior Alanis Alvarado, starting the week with a season-best 20-kill, 12-dig performance against Iona before racking up nine kills in the win over Mahattan. Alvarado continues to pace the Peacocks offensively with team-high set averages in kills (2.89) and points (3.24), while her hitting percentage ranks fourth on the team (.136). She ranks in the top-10 in the MAAC in kills and points per set.
- Graduate student Wildalys Soto's 6.96 assists/set average is by far most on the team and ranks seventh in the MAAC, while defensively sophomore Alwen Pila leads the group averaging 3.83 digs/set and ranks third on the team among those with 100+ receptions with a .931 reception percentage. Her 0.33 aces/set average leads the Peacocks, as well.
- Saint Peter's looks to close out the regular season in a big way after taking down Mahattan last Sunday and send the senior group off with a pair of victories.
Honoring the Seniors
- Prior to Sunday's matchup against the Griffins, SPU will honor seniors Alanis Alvarado, Gabriela Castro, Angeleyshka Curbelo, Andrea Lombeyda, Jeysi Montero, Stephanie Rivera and Wildalys Soto.
- The senior class compiled a total of 14 victories in three seasons in Jersey City and was a part of the 2018 team that advanced to the MAAC Tournament and won a postseason contest for the first time since the 2006 season.
- They fought through the challenges presented by a COVID-19-effected season last spring and returned to the court this fall.
