Opening Word:
- The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team returns to Jersey City this weekend for two bouts against Quinnipiac. The games are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 9-10), with each contest set for 1 p.m. tip-offs.
- The Peacocks are coming off their first conference defeats of the season, following a series sweep at the hands of preseason Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) favorite Manhattan.
- During their last time out, the women dropped a 69-55 decision to the Jaspers on Jan. 2. Redshirt-seniors Taiah Thornton and Kendrea Williams each led the Peacocks in offense in the exchange, notching 16 points apiece.
- The upcoming series against the Bobcats will be the team's first home game of 2021, as the last time the Peacocks played in Jersey City was during their 65-40 win over Canisius on Dec. 20, 2020.
History with the Bobcats:
- The Peacocks are seeking their first victory over the Hamden-based Bobcats, with Saint Peter's entering the weekend 0-12 against Quinnipiac all-time.
- During the last clash between the two sides on Feb. 27, 2020, the Saint Peter's fell in a nail-biter in Hamden, dropping a 70-69 decision to the then-defending MAAC champions.
- Thornton will look to repeat her success against Quinnipiac this weekend, as she dropped a team-leading 27 points in the last matchup, adding five triples to her stat sheet.
Start 'Em Young:
- The freshmen duo of Sky Castro and Ajia James are off to a strong start to their time in Jersey City, as the pair stand as the only players on the team to have started in all 11 games thus far.
- The two forwards have made their presence felt all over the floor, but nowhere as prominent as on the glass. Heading into this weekend, Castro sits atop the MAAC leaderboard for total rebounds with 89, while James ranks third with 77.
- Castro will look to be the first MAAC women's player to eclipse 100 rebounds on the season in Saturday's game against the Bobcats.
- James and Castro have been experiencing valuable playing time as well as the schedule nears the midway point of the season, with the two players averaging 23.5 and 22 minutes of action per game, respectively.
- The rookies are also tied with senior Jessica Woods for the most blocks on the team, as all three players have tallied six rejections each ahead of this weekend's games.
Up Next:
- The Peacocks will travel to Lawrenceville next weekend for a series against hOURglass rival Rider. The games will take place on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 16-17) and will start at 7 p.m.
