JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University women's basketball fell in its second contest with Quinnipiac this weekend, dropping the 68-56 decision in Jersey City on Sunday. The Peacocks are now 4-4 in conference play and rank fifth in the conference standings.
Graduate student
Jenna Clark and redshirt-senior
Kendrea Williams led the way on the offensive front for the blue and white, as they both dropped 11 points on the day. The performance marks Clark's season-high outing and falls just short of her career-high of 12 points, which she scored on Dec. 29, 2018 against Georgian Court while playing for FDU. Freshman
Sky Castro grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds in the exchange while adding seven points scored.
How It Happened
- The Peacocks went scoreless for the first two minutes of Sunday's affair while the Bobcats were able to start off with a 4-0 lead. Freshman Ajia James dropped the first bucket of the day for Saint Peter's, hitting a smooth jumper off the inbound from redshirt-senior Taiah Thornton.
- After falling to a 12-2 deficit midway through the opening period, freshman Victoria Ikenasio was able to finish on a driving lay-up off another Thornton inbound. This spurred an 8-0 run from the Peacocks, as they cut the Quinnipiac lead to 12-10 with one minute remaining in the quarter.
- The Bobcats, holding a 17-12 lead entering the second period, were able to extend their lead to double digits once against following a 7-0 run. The streak was ended by Thornton, who finished on a solo driving lay-up.
- Baskets from Thornton and graduate Jenna Clark would keep Saint Peter's within 10 until the visitors staged an 11-1 run, taking their largest lead of the day at 37-17 with 2:47 left in the half.
- Saint Peter's struck first in the second half as Castro knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the score to 42-21. The effort was followed up by two unanswered triples from Thornton and Williams, cutting the Quinnipiac advantage back to 15 points.
- The margin hovered around the 20-point mark for the remainder of the quarter, with Thornton, Williams, and James contributing to the offensive effort. Heading into the final quarter, Saint Peter's trailed 59-37.
- A pull-up jumper from freshman Rachel Kuhl kickstarted an 11-0 Saint Peter's run at the beginning of the fourth stanza, drawing the score to 59-48 with five minutes remaining.
- A huge triple from Clark trimmed the Quinnipiac lead back to single digits with just over four minutes on the clock. The Bobcats were able to hang on, however, edging back out to a double-digit lead and sealing the victory at 68-56.
