HAMPTON, VA- The Saint Peter's University softball team returned to Hampton on Sunday (March 8), to face off against UMBC in the final tilt of the 2020 Pirate Invitational. The Peacocks fought hard, however the Retrievers gained an early lead and wouldn't look back as the Peacocks fell 7-0.
Cara McNulty,
Samantha Miller, and
Georgia Verrastro each had a hit against the Retrievers in Sunday's contest.
How it Happened:
- UMBC was able to take an early lead in Sunday's affair, notching a 2-0 advantage over the Peacocks following the top of the third inning.
- The Retrievers then exploded offensively in the bottom of the third, putting up five runs in the inning to increase their lead to 7-0.
- A double from McNulty in the bottom of the fourth inning would breathe some life into the Saint Peter's offense, but would not be able to lift the team over UMBC.
- After UMBC's scoring performance in the third, neither team could find home plate again for the remainder of the contest.
Inside the Numbers:
- Sophomore Sydney Senerchia was out to impress again on Sunday, pitching for the final three innings of the game and only allowed a single hit, improving on her three inning, one-run performance from Saturday's win over Norfolk State.
- McNulty's double in the bottom of the fourth marks the freshman's first of her collegiate career.
- Freshman Bailey Hartman was the lone Peacock to earn a walk against the Retrievers.
