Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Coppin State on Wednesday

Peacocks finish day in Baltimore with two wins over the Eagles

BALTIMORE, MD - The Saint Peter's University softball team completed its first sweep of the season Wednesday (March 11), taking both wins in a doubleheader at Coppin State. The first game was narrowly decided by a 7-6 margin through seven innings played, however the Peacocks turned up the pace in the second game, securing a dominant 9-1 win in five innings.

Five Peacocks finished the day with multiple RBI's, including Brandi Feeney, Alina Guevara, Bailey Hartman, Anja Solveig Kane, and Katie Sciglimpaglia. Hartman's two RBI's in the second game of the day mark the freshman's first of her career. The Peacocks also had strong performances on the mound Wednesday, with sophomore Sydney Senerchia and freshman Sophie Wilson combining for nine innings pitched and allowing just three runs.

Game 1 Notes:
  • The Peacocks brought the bats out early Wednesday, as Saint Peter's put up three runs in the top of the opening frame off the efforts of Feeney, Guevara, and Samantha Miller.
  • The Eagles didn't waste any time though, tying the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the first inning on four hits.
  • Saint Peter's would have another three-run inning in the top of the third, as Guevara and Alyssa Mido brought in runs from Feeney and Sciglimpaglia. The Eagles then scored one run in the bottom of the third to bring the score to 6-4 in favor of the Peacocks.
  • The scoreboard remained unchanged until the top of the sixth, when Sciglimpaglia flied out to center field, bringing in Kane in the process.
  • A two-run seventh inning from the Eagles would be too little too late for Coppin State, as Saint Peter's came out on top with a 7-6 victory.
Game 2 Notes:
  • Saint Peter's did not lose any of its momentum heading into game two, exploding offensively in the first inning with six runs on the bats of Sciglimpaglia, Feeney, and Hartman, while some smart base running from Mido and Feeney secured another run.
  • Feeney tacked on another RBI in the third inning, bringing in classmate Cara McNulty to increase the Peacocks' lead to 7-0.
  • The Eagles got their first run of the day in the bottom of the third, but a two-run blast over the left field fence from Kane in the bottom of the fifth would seal the game for the Peacocks, taking the five-inning victory via a 9-1 margin.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Kane's two-run home run in the second game of the day marks the sophomore's first of the year, bringing her RBI total up to four.
  • Wilson had her strongest showing of the season in game two against the Eagles, allowing just one run through five innings without allowing a single walk.
  • Miller batted a combined .750 through both games on Wednesday, while Alyssa Adams, Feeney, and Sciglimpaglia all finished the day batting .500 over the course of the two contests.
  • The Peacocks' 9-1 win marks the first early-stoppage victory for Saint Peter's this season.
Coach's Quote - Chris Stelma:
  • "We had a great day in Maryland today. We hit on all three cylinders with quality pitching, constant hitting and stellar defense."
  • "It's nice to see our hard work as a team translate to a performance like this."
  • "These young ladies are really something special and we are anxious to get back at it tomorrow."
Up Next:
  • The Peacocks will remain in the DMV for a doubleheader at Howard University on March 12 with a 3 p.m. start time.
