Softball Splits Series with Howard Thursday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Saint Peter's University softball team finished its trip in the DMV on Thursday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at Howard. The Peacocks took the opening ledger, 3-1, thanks to a stellar defensive performance and timely hitting before the Bison split the twin bill with an 8-0 decision in the second bout.

Thursday's contests will be the last games played of the 2020 campaign, as earlier today the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and its Council of Presidents unanimously decided, in accordance with the membership's ongoing commitment to the health and safety of its student athletes and athletic department representatives and as a result of the growing national concern of the COVID-19 pandemic, to cancel all remaining spring sports competitions, practices (including captain's practices) and other athletic-related activities for the remainder of the 2020 Spring semester.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Council of Presidents regrettably decided to make these challenging decisions to prioritize the health and safety of our student-athletes and out of concern for the broader health and well-being of our various school communities.

Head Coach Chris Stelma:
  • "The events of the day made for an emotional one for all. We were extremely happy to play today and reach our goal of getting a three-game winning streak going! This team won't get to have the season we wanted, but it did show the growth of the program and our desire for change and a winning environment!
  • I'd like to personally thank our Seniors. Georgia Verrastro has been a great captain and it's been a pleasure to watch her grow as a player, a person and as a leader. Alina Guevara has not only been one of our best producers on the field, but her care of the younger players in the program has made serious change in who we are as a team. Taylor White has battled through injuries and shown great commitment to the team and program helping us in so many ways.
  • Georgia and Alina have been with me since I started and they and I set out to make change in this softball program. With the best start in the win/loss column as well as who we have become as a team, we couldn't ask for more of these two ladies. Taylor was part of my first recruiting class which is always special. She came in knowing what we are trying to accomplish and gave her all to contribute.
  • While we are obviously sadden by the news, we would like to also thank those who had to make very difficult decisions to keep our Student-Athletes safe.
  • Howard University could not have handled these games with more class. I'd like to thank Head Coach Victoria Tyson as well as the Howard University Athletic Department for honoring all Seniors that were part of today's game.
  • Mostly, I would also like to thank our coaches, Sue Ruffo and Alyssa Ruiz for their tireless efforts, our administration and mostly our student-athletes. They make this a rewarding experience with their desire and dedication each and every day.
  • While we didn't get to finish what we started this season, we are extremely excited for the future of the Peacock Softball program!"
