Baseball Puts up Seven Runs in Defeat at The Citadel

Peacocks fall 14-7

CHARLESTON, SC – The Saint Peter's baseball team fell in game one of a three-game set at The Citadel on Friday. The Peacocks dropped the contest 14-7.
 
How it Happened
  • Hunter Mason hit his first home run of the season to put Saint Peter's ahead 1-0 in the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning after recording two outs, an error led to four runs being scored for The Citadel.
  • The Peacocks cut the deficit in half in the second, with a run scored by leadoff hitter Sam Delcollo after he got on base with a double. But again, the Bulldogs responded, adding two additional runs to extend the lead to 6-2.
  • Neither team scored in the third and fourth innings, keeping the score static.
  • In the fifth, Mason hit an RBI double which scored Joey Vitiello. Then, a fielder's choice allowed Nick Sciubba to score from third, cutting the score to 6-4.
  • Over the next three innings, The Citadel scored eight runs, to go ahead 14-4.
  • Trailing by 10, Saint Peter's scored three more runs in the eighth. 
  • Delcollo drove in two runs with his double to right center, followed by a RBI single up the middle from Andrew Veit.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • The Peacocks posted seven hits and seven runs on the day.
  • This was the third time in nine games that Saint Peter's scored seven runs. 
  • Delcollo had the most productive afternoon, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
  • Mason and Veit both posted identical stat lines of two hits, two RBI, and one run.
  • John Gavura ended his day with a hit, a run scored, and a RBI.
  • Saint Peter's used nine different pitchers by committee, that combined for five strikeouts.
