Women’s Basketball Falls to Marist Thursday Night

Peacocks fall to top-ranked Red Foxes

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team fell to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) top-ranked Marist on Thursday night in an 82-60 decision. Sophomore Briyanah Richardson had another standout performance against the Red Foxes, scoring 20 points in the affair while going 4-for-5 from long range. 15 of Richardson's points came in the first half.

How It Happened
  • Saint Peter's started strong after the opening whistle on Thursday night, going up 4-0 in the opening minutes of play. Marist was quick to respond, going on a 12-0 run over a two and a half minute span. Zoe Pero would eventually end the stretch with a contested layup, bringing the score to 12-6.
  • Key defensive turnovers for the Peacocks and back-to-back triples from Richardson would eventually cut the Marist lead to just one point as the scoreboard read 17-16 late in the opening period.
  • After starting the second quarter down 25-16, the Peacocks would chip away at the Red Foxes' lead, bringing the score to 27-21.
  • A 7-2 run for the Peacocks during the second stanza brought the game to within four, as the Peacocks trailed their opponents 27-23 with five minutes left in the half.
  • Further consistency on both ends would narrow the gap even further, when consecutive triples from Sammy Lochner and Richardson cut the Marist lead to 34-33. The Peacocks would then regain a 37-36 lead just minutes later following a successful pull-up jumper from Wil'lisha Jackson. Heading into the half, Marist held a 40-37 lead.
  • The two sides would exchange blows over the first two minutes of the second half, as the Red Foxes maintained a three-point advantage, staying ahead via a 47-44 margin.
  • Late in the quarter, Marist would eventually edge out to a 54-46 lead, but a nice move in the post by Pero would keep the Peacocks within six. Marist separated itself once more, going up 64-51 with less than two minutes left in the third stanza.
  • The Red Foxes remained consistent to start the final 10 minutes of play, going on a 9-4 run and increasing their lead to 73-55. Thornton would then give the Peacocks a much-needed offensive boost, hitting a key triple from the corner with just over six minutes left in the game.
  • Marist would eventually take its first 20-point lead with two and a half minutes remaining in the game, going up 80-60 over the Peacocks.
Inside The Numbers:
  • Six of the Peacocks' first eight points came by the hands of Pero, who started the game 2-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line.
  • The Red Foxes came out firing from deep in the first quarter, shooting 5-for-7 from beyond the arc in the first 10 minutes of play.
  • Heading into the half, Richardson was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range while leading both teams in scoring with 15 points.
  • The Red Foxes took nearly twice as many trips to the line than the Peacocks during the contest, shooting 10-for-18 while Saint Peter's went 9-for-10.
  • Marist had the upper hand in rebounding on the night, grabbing 36 boards compared to 30 from the Peacocks, but Saint Peter's was more dominant on the offensive glass, grabbing 10 offensive rebounds to Marist's eight.
