Peacocks drop game 9-7

ATLANTA, GA – Despite leading for more than five innings, the Saint Peter's baseball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Georgia State on Sunday afternoon, falling 9-7.

How it Happened
  • Saint Peter's scored in the opening inning for the second consecutive game.
  • With runners on second and third, Trent Koerner singled to center field to drive in Nicholas Sciubba for the game's opening run.
  • Hunter Mason and Koerner both crossed home plate following a fielding error by Georgia State's second baseman to bring the lead to 3-0.
  • The Peacocks' lead grew to 5-0 in the bottom half of the second inning.
  • Another error by Georgia State put run number four on the board, this time Jesse Matos advanced home from a throwing error.
  • Mason then drove in Joey Vitiello from third with his single through the left side, putting Saint Peter's up 5-0.
  • Georgia State slowly cut into the lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the third and three in the fourth to bring the score to 5-4.
  • The Peacocks again failed to put a run up in the sixth with all three batters in the inning being retired, opening the door for Georgia State to take the lead with three more runs in the bottom frame of the inning.
  • Down 7-5, Mason hit a two RBI double to right field, scoring Andrew Connor and Sciubba, knotting the contest at 7-7.
  • Saint Peter's gave up two more runs in the bottom of the eighth and could not muster up any more runs in the ninth to secure the win.

Inside the Numbers
  • Mason was the offensive leader for the Peacocks, going 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and three RBI.

Coach's Quotes – Lou Proietti
  • "We put ourselves in a position to win early and were unable to play a full nine innings. We walked way too many guys to win."
  • "Offensively, we are starting to make strides. I think we had a better approach at the plate and our defense was solid again today."
  • "Hopefully we can put together a complete game."
  • "There were some encouraging signs this weekend, unfortunately we have nothing to show for it."
  • "Excited to get back to practice to get ourselves ready for FDU on Wednesday and Murray State next weekend."

On Deck
  • The Peacocks return to New Jersey on Wednesday, Feb. 19 for a single game at Fairleigh Dickinson.
  • The team then travels to Kentucky for a four-game weekend series at Murray State from Feb. 21-23.
