Women’s Basketball Tops Canisius in Wire-to-Wire Win Sunday Night

Peacocks surge to 65-40 victory over Golden Griffins

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team completed its second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series sweep Sunday night, defeating conference foe Canisius 65-40. With the win, the Peacocks improve to 4-0 on the season and remain in sole first place in the league standings. Consequently, Saint Peter's stands as the only program in the MAAC on either the men's or women's side to hold a record of 4-0.

Showing out for the Peacocks yet again was redshirt-senior Kendrea Williams, scoring 17 points to lead the Saint Peter's offense while shooting 50 percent from the floor as well as from beyond the arc, finishing 5-of-10 from deep range. Taiah Thornton also had another strong showing, scoring 13 points while shooting 66.7 percent from the floor and recording four rebounds and four assists on the night. Senior Jessica Woods was a force on the glass, leading the Peacocks with 12 rebounds and pulling up just short of a double-double with nine points.

How It Happened
  • Freshman Ajia James was the first Peacock to get on the board in Sunday's exchange, finishing a tough shot from under the basket off a feed from Thornton. A Williams three-pointer less than a minute later gave the Peacocks a 5-0 advantage with 7:00 remaining in the quarter.
  • Saint Peter's was able to extend its lead to 15-3 with under three minutes to go in the opening quarter following a 10-0 run, which featured successful trips to the line from Woods and freshman Taylor Abraham
  • The Peacocks would close out the first quarter with a 17-5 lead.
  • The two sides traded shots to start the second quarter, with Saint Peter's adding six points off deep balls from Williams and junior Tyara McQueen
  • A Sky Castro offensive rebound and follow-up bucket brought the score to 25-12 in favor of the blue and white with five minutes to play in the half.
  • The visitors closed out the half on a 6-2 run, cutting the Saint Peter's lead back to single digits as the Peacocks went into the locker room with a 27-18 edge.
  • Thornton opened the second half with a deep three-point shot off the feed from junior Binta Salawu and followed it up with a mid-range jumper from James on the next possession, increasing the Peacocks' advantage to 32-18.
  • Two straight deep balls from Williams kept the Golden Griffins at bay with six minutes remaining in the frame, as the Peacocks had strung together an 11-5 run up to that point in the period, going up 38-23.
  • Another 8-2 run for Saint Peter's moments later, featuring triples from Williams and Salawu, gave the team a 46-25 lead, which was the team's largest up to that point. Heading into the break, Saint Peter's led 50-32.
  • Salawu's second triple of the night opened the final frame for the Peacocks, bringing the Saint Peter's lead back to 21 points (53-32).
  • It was all Saint Peter's from there on out, as the Peacocks allowed only three fourth-quarter buckets from the visitors, with Thornton, Woods, McQueen, and freshman Victoria Ikenasio all contributing in the final effort.
Inside The Numbers:
  • The 4-0 start to MAAC play is the team's best commencement to conference play since the 1996-97 season.
  • Williams's 17-point performance is the Piscataway native's third game in the past four contests in which she has finished with 15+ points.
  • Williams is also the first player in the MAAC this year to eclipse the 100-point mark, as she has now recorded 104 points on the season following Sunday night's win.
  • Castro and James currently sit in first and second place, respectively, in the MAAC for total rebounds, tallying 70 and 64 rebounds, respectively, on the year.
  • Saint Peter's is currently the only team in the MAAC with a 4-0 record.
  • The Peacocks improved vastly upon their third quarter performance in Saturday's matchup, shooting 50 percent from the field in the third frame on Sunday night while also going five-for-eight from beyond the arc.
  • Penetration played a pivotal role in Sunday's win, as Saint Peter's finished with 20 points in the paint compared to the Golden Griffins' six points in the key.
Up Next:
  • The Peacocks will travel to FDU on Tuesday, Dec. 22 for their final non-conference matchup of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
