Women’s Basketball Secures Conference-Opening Victory over Iona Saturday

Peacocks take first win of MAAC schedule by a 63-54 margin

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team got back on track Saturday night, taking a 63-54 win in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener against Iona. The game marks the second straight regular season game in which the Peacocks have come away victorious against the Gaels.

Redshirt senior Kendrea Williams had an impressive showing against Iona, dropping 21 points in the exchange while shooting 66 percent from the floor and going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Williams's classmate Taiah Thornton also showed up big in Saturday night's win, scoring 15 points of her own while leading the team in steals with four.

How It Happened
  • The Peacocks' first bucket of the night came from freshman Ajia James off a patented Thornton inbound ending in a quick lay-up under the hoop. Saint Peter's rode the momentum, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after five minutes of play.
  • The Peacocks maintained their lead later in the quarter, gaining a 9-2 advantage over the Gaels following a pair of successful free throws from freshman Giah Moore
  • Thornton would score four unanswered points late in the quarter due to a key steal by the Pennsauken native to give the Peacocks a 13-4 lead to finish out the frame.
  • Both sides went scoreless over the first four minutes of the second quarter until freshman Victoria Ikenasio made a strong move in the paint, finishing the shot and giving Saint Peter's an 11 point lead.
  • Iona would eventually hit the first triple of the game with four and a half minutes remaining in the half, trimming the Saint Peter's lead to eight until graduate Jenna Clark answered with a triple of her own, bringing the score to 18-7 in favor of the Peacocks.
  • A 10-4 lead from Iona would leave Saint Peter's closing out the half with a 22-17 advantage.
  • James opened the second-half scoring for the Peacocks, but a subsequent 6-0 run by the Gaels brought the hosts to within one point of Saint Peter's, drawing the score to 24-23.
  • The score was eventually leveled at 27-27 with just over three minutes remaining in the third frame, until a pair of shots from the line courtesy of Binta Salawu put Saint Peter's back up by two.
  • Two consecutive scores from Iona, however, gave the Gaels their first lead of the game, going up 31-29.
  • A 13-8 run by the Peacocks to start the fourth quarter brought the team back to a 43-36 advantage, with 10 points coming from Williams and the additional three from Thornton. The lead was narrowed to a single point once more midway through the final period after back-to-back Iona triples.
  • Five straight unanswered points from Thornton with just over two minutes left to play brought the Peacocks back to a six point, 53-47 lead.
  • Saint Peter's was able to keep the pressure on, finishing the game on a 10-7 run, closing out the 63-54 win.
