Siena Edges Women’s Volleyball Sunday Afternoon

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's University women's volleyball program bounced back from an opening-frame loss to tie the match at a set apiece, but visiting Siena overcame a seven-point deficit in the third stanza and then held off the hosts in the fourth set to hand the Peacocks a 3-1 setback on Sunday afternoon at the Yanitelli Center.

The Basics
Score: Siena 3, Saint Peter's 1
Records: Saint Peter's (3-12, 1-3) | Siena (7-7, 2-2)
Location: Yanitelli Center | Jersey City, N.J.

How It Happened

  • It was all Saint Peter's out of the gate, as the home side won eight of the first nine points of the contest and then ripped off five straight to take a 10-point lead at 15-5. The Saints rallied by winning 10-of-11 at one point and took their first lead at 21-19. Saint Peter's would not go quietly, winning four of the next five to get within two points of the first frame, but the Saints — after a timeout — responded with three straight points to grab the opening ledger by a 25-23 margin.
  • The script was somewhat flipped in the second set, at least at the beginning, as Siena found itself in front by margins of 5-1 and 9-4 before a dramatic charge by the home side. The Peacocks would take nine of the next 13 points to even things at 13-13, and a back-and-forth battle ensued as neither side saw their lead grow to more than three until Siena opened a 21-18 advantage late in the frame. This time, however, it was the hosts who saved their best for last, as Saint Peter's ended the second set with a 6-1 scoring run to rally from down 22-18 and 23-22 on the way to a 25-23 set victory that tied the match.
  • The turning point of the match came in the third; despite facing an early seven-point deficit, Siena would claw all the way back thanks to a 14-4 scoring run that turned a 13-6 deficit into a 20-17 advantage. The Peacocks would ultimately stave off back-to-back set points before the visitors prevailed, 25-22, to go back out in front.
  • After a back-and-forth start to what ultimately was the final frame, the Peacocks again took a big lead with a 12-6 advantage after 18 rallies, but the Saints marched right back by claiming 12 of the next 18 points to give them an 18-17 lead. A seesaw affair would follow down the stretch, as the lead changed four times before the Peacocks staved off match point at 24-24. But Siena would secure the fourth set, and the match, with back-to-back kills to take the ledger by a 26-24 tally.
