Late Heroics by Garcia Propel Men’s Soccer to 1-0 Win in Home Opener

Garcia’s first goal as a Peacock secures win over St. Francis Brooklyn

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team picked up its second victory of 2019 on Saturday, besting nearby St. Francis Brooklyn by a 1-0 decision. Junior transfer student Alex Garcia broke a scoreless tie in the 79th minute after a beautiful feed from Omar Seghiri to propel the Peacocks to the win.

Game Notes
  • Saint Peter's and St. Francis Brooklyn were evenly matched for the entire first half, with the Peacocks recording six shots with two on goal, while the Terriers fired off four shots with one hitting the target.
  • The match would remain scoreless until the 79th minute after junior Dominic Laws began the game-winning scoring sequence by back-heeling a pass through a Terrier defender's legs to Seghiri, who sent a cross to the far post en route for Garcia, who would send the volley past the outstretched keeper for the score.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Herman Wulff secured a clean sheet for the Peacocks, keeping the Terriers at bay through the majority of the match before junior Robbie Anderson manned the net over the final four minutes to close out the match.
Inside the Numbers
  • Garcia's goal is his first for the Peacocks, and Seghiri's assist marks the rookie's first of his collegiate career.
  • Laws' assist marks the junior's first of the season and brings his career total up to four.
  • Wulff picked up his first career shutout in his first collegiate start.
Coach's Quotes - Julian Richens
  • Good result, good performance today against a very well organized and well coached team which was hard to break down."

  • "I think our work rate and our commitment to defending allowed us to go and exploit one of the areas that we felt we could get on the score sheet today."

  • "Delighted for Alex to score the winning goal, he's worked hard to get himself back and fit. Omar with the assist also, and he's bided his time so we're looking forward to their contributions for the rest of the season."

  • "Herman is very confident, we've got good goalkeepers vying for the position and Herman's done very well today in his first collegiate start. Also it gives him a good taste of what Division I soccer is all about, because from both teams it was a very well fought, committed game today.
