Peacocks Miss Buzzer Beater, Fall to Rival Monmouth

The Peacocks suffered a 53-51 defeat at the hands of Monmouth on Thursday night

JERSEY CITY, NJThe Saint Peter's men's basketball team dropped its fourth straight contest and the season series to hOURglass Rival Monmouth following a 53-51 heartbreaker on Thursday night at the Yanitelli Center.

Game Notes
  • Saint Peter's (6-16, 3-7) fell behind Monmouth (9-16, 8-4) 6-0 to start the night.
  • Trailing 11-4, by the 15:49 mark, the Peacocks began a 17-0 run over the next seven minutes.
  • The run was ignited when Davauhnte Turner gave the Peacocks their first lead of the evening, hitting three consecutive 3-pointers, putting Saint Peter's up 13-11.
  • Samuel Idowu slammed down a two-handed dunk to extend the lead to 15-11.
  • On the Peacocks' next possession, Dallas Watson rained a 3-pointer, pushing the lead to 18-11, before he added one free throw and KC Ndefo knocked down a pair of free throws to put the Peacocks up 21-11, the largest lead of the night for the team on 50% shooting from the field up to that point.
  • The Hawks responded with a 7-0 rally, to cut the Saint Peter's lead to one-possession.
  • Over the final six minutes of the half, the Peacocks maintained the lead, taking a 27-25 lead into the break.
  • The second half began with Monmouth scoring eight out of the first 10 points to overtake the lead over the Peacocks at 33-29.
  • The Peacocks fell behind by as many as eight points, but slowly crept back into the contest, and then back to back triples from Idowu and Manny Dixon pulled the Peacocks to within 2-points, trailing 44-42.
  • The Peacocks would eventually retake the lead following a pair of Dixon free throws, putting Saint Peter's up 47-46 with 5:28 to play.
  • The game would tie up at 47 and 51 with under three minutes on the clock.
  • With 1:15 left, Monmouth's Diago Quinn made the go-ahead layup, to put the Peacocks down 53-51.
  • Trailing by two, Saint Peter's retrieved the ball on the final possession with 17 seconds remaining.
  • Following the timeout, Watson put up a 3-pointer with four seconds showing, but missed as the clock expired.
Inside the Numbers
  • Turner was Saint Peter's leading scorer for the 17th time this season, notching a game-high 20 points on 5-for-10 shooting from downtown.
  • It was his 10th 20-point performance of the year.
  • Idowu came up short of his season's first double-double, scoring 16 points and snagging eight rebounds to go along with a pair of blocks.
  • Dixon added five points and a team-leading three assists.
  • Ndefo rejected a career-high five shots in the game.
