Women’s Volleyball Falls to Iona on Wednesday

Peacocks dropped the match 1-3

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Saint Peter's women's volleyball team fell to Iona College in a midweek affair at the Hynes Athletic Center on Wednesday. The Peacocks battled in all four sets but eventually suffered a 1-3 (20-25, 22-25, 28-26, 21-25) defeat.

Match Notes

  • It was neck and neck through the first 32 points of the match with no clear advantage for either side. Iona put together a late 4-0 run to break away from Saint Peter's and grab the set win.
  • The Peacocks came out flat in the second set, giving up 5-1 and 10-4 runs to the Gaels. Eventually, Saint Peter's offense picked up and the team outscored Iona 12-2 behind Danielle Lopez, Alanis Alvarado, and Stephanie Rivera each spiking two kills to give the Peacocks a 16-12 lead. The visitors would give up the lead five points later and drop the set 22-25.
  • Not going away without a fight, the Peacocks mustered up a win in the third set. Although Saint Peter's trailed the majority of the set, when it was time to make a stop and score, the Peacocks got a kill from Angeleyshka Curbelo and a service ace by Yaidelis Lopez-Jimenez to snag a 28-26 victory.
  • The women used that momentum to take an early lead in the fourth set and not relinquish it until midway through the set. Once Iona flipped the lead change, the Peacocks did not take the lead back again and the Gaels took the set 25-21.
