JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team put a bow on the preseason with a 75-59 win over NYIT on Saturday at the Yanitelli Center. Redshirt-junior
Kendrea Williams led the way for the Peacocks, knocking down 24 points while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.
Game Notes vs. NYIT:
- Just under two minutes into the game, redshirt-junior Taiah Thornton opened the scoring for the Peacocks, securing the offensive rebound and laying the ball up and in for two points.
- Williams followed the play up with her first three-pointer of the night, pulling up from the corner on an assist from Yamel Abreu to put the Peacocks up 5-2.
- Redshirt-junior Gabrielle Harris put up her first points of the night on a pair of free throws late in the first quarter, making both and putting the Peacocks up 18-17.
- With just over four minutes to go in the second quarter, sophomore Cinnamon Dockery recorded a pivotal three-pointer on the assist from Harris, putting the Peacocks up 29-23.
- At the beginning of the second half, the Bears had cut the Peacocks' lead to 35-32 until Abreu hit a shot from beyond the arc with just under eight minutes remaining in the third to put give Saint Peter's the 38-32 advantage.
- Abreu would go on to make the next two shots for the Peacocks and recorded a helper to Williams who drained a three to extend the Peacocks' lead to 46-36.
- Sophomore Wil'lisha Jackson had a productive fourth quarter, scoring twice, including a fastbreak layup at midway through the fourth quarter to put the Peacocks up 64-49 with less than six minutes remaining in the game. The hosts would close it out from there to wrap up the preseason with a 16-point victory.
Inside The Numbers:
- The Peacocks had three players record double-digit points against NYIT.
- Williams and Abreu led the team in three-pointers, notching four apiece throughout the contest.
- Jackson led the squad in rebounds, grabbing seven boards on the night.
- Abreu also led the team in assists, dishing out five passes on the night that led to scores for the Peacocks.
