Lindqvist’s Heroics Propel Men’s Soccer to Victory over Siena in Regular Season Finale

Senior captain Frederik Lindqvist netted the golden goal for the second consecutive contest

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team finished the regular season strong on Saturday, winning its program-record ninth straight MAAC contest in overtime by a 2-1 margin over Siena on Saturday at Jaroschak Field. Junior midfielder Jordan Jowers notched the equalizer for the Peacocks late in the game, and senior Frederik Lindqvist netted the golden goal for the second consecutive contest -- appropriately enough on Senior Day -- to cap off the victory.

Game Notes
  • The Saints jumped out to an early lead on Saturday, going up 1-0 in the 21st minute after a goal by Gylfi Gestsson.
  • The score went unchanged through the remainder of the first half and all the way until the 80th minute of action; that was when Jowers sunk the Peacocks' first goal of the day off an assist from junior forward Dominic Laws to level the ledger at 1-1, sending the match to overtime for the sixth time during Saint Peters' conference slate.
  • The Peacocks' lone senior would go on to be the hero of his own Senior Day, as Lindqvist put in the golden goal in the 98th minute on a double assist from Jowers and fellow defender Philip Smith, giving the Peacocks the 2-1 victory in front of the home crowd.
  • The Peacocks' performance on Saturday caps off an incredible nine-game winning streak to close out the regular season, during which the Peacocks did not drop a single contest in conference play dating back to a double-overtime defeat at Quinnipiac on Oct. 2, one month ago to the day.
Inside the Numbers
  • The Peacocks head into the postseason having won nine out of 10 conference matches on the year, and the team's 9-1-0 conference record is the best of any Peacock squad in program history.
  • Lindqvist's overtime game-winner is the senior's second in as many games, having sealed the Peacocks' previous bout against Manhattan with a header in the 95th minute.
  • Jowers' goal is the junior captain's seventh of the season; he has scored a goal in each of his team's last three matches. Jowers also holds five assists on the season, following the helper to Lindqvist.
  • Smith's assist is the junior's first of his career for the Peacocks, and the Durham, England, native now is up to three points on the season.
  • Laws' assist brought his season total to seven and his team-leading season point total at the end of the regular season stands at 29.
Coach's Quotes - Julian Richens
  • "Really tough game against an organised and well-coached team. We did our best to break them down and were prepared to be patient with the ball."
  • "Great combination from Dom and Jordan for the first goal, then a big time save from Herman to keep us in it. Very fitting that Frederik gets the winner on his senior day."
  • "We will use the next week to get a good balance between preparing for our next game, maintaining our fitness levels and keeping mentally and physically fresh."
Up Next
  • The Peacocks will enjoy a 12-day respite after earning the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2019 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship. In doing so, Saint Peter's will have a bye straight through to the semifinal round of the tournament, set to take place on Nov. 14 at Jaroschak Field. The Peacocks will face off against the lowest advancing seed from the tounrmanent's first round.
