BALTIMORE, MD - The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team got back on track Friday afternoon after posting an 82-57 road win against Coppin State. After an up-and-down opening frame, the Peacocks found their stride offensively and never looked back, as five players recorded double-digit performances for the second straight game. Redshirt-junior
Kendrea Williams had her most successful game in a Peacock uniform on Friday, scoring a team-high 23 points while shooting an impressive 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
- Just over two minutes into the first quarter, Wil'lisha Jackson started her day off with a pullup jumper for the first basket of the day.
- Williams started off her incredible run with a three-ball at the 6:36 mark to give the Peacocks a 7-3 lead.
- Towards the middle of the second quarter, Yamel Abreu broke into the action by grabbing a defensive board and bringing it the length of the court for a contested layup.
- Abreu followed it up with back-to-back three-pointers late in the first half to give the Peacocks a 35-27 lead.
- The Peacocks would ultimately head into the locker room at the midway point leading 37-30, with senior captain Zoe Pero scoring the final points before the horn.
- Saint Peter's came out firing in the second half, as sophomore Briyanah Richardson taking the ball in for the first score less than 20 seconds into the half, and following it up with a triple of her own on the next phase.
- Then, Williams hit her sixth deep ball on the day with 8:07 left in the third quarter to extend the Peacocks' lead to 45-30.
- Near the end of the third, Pero made a pivotal defensive stop, cutting off the attacking forward and guiding the opposing player out of bounds for a successful team turnover.
- With less than eight minutes to play, Tyara McQueen and Richardson teamed up on back-to-back three-pointers, giving the Peacocks a 68-45 advantage.
- With just shy of four minutes remaining, Abreu recorded her seventh assist of the day on a smooth feed to Pero, who then put in her 10th point of the day on a layup.
Inside The Numbers:
- The Peacocks have now scored more than 80 points in their past three contests. The last time the program scored 80+ in three consecutive games was in the 1996-97 season, when Saint Peter's posted 83, 87, and 80 against Fordham, Furman, and Howard, respectively.
- Five different Peacocks scored in double-digits during Friday's game, including Williams (23), Abreu (15), Taiah Thornton (14), Richardson (11), and Pero (10).
- Williams' seven made triples were just one shy of the school record which was set back in 2013.
- The Peacocks' largest lead of the game was 26 points, first hitting that mark with 5:16 left in the game after an Abreu layup.
- In addition to her season-high 15 points, Abreu also led the team in assists, dishing out seven helpers to her teammates.
- Pero's performance on Friday earned the senior her first double-digit scoring performance of the season; she also recorded a team-high six rebounds.
