Men’s Soccer Clinches MAAC Regular Season Title with Overtime Thriller vs. Manhattan

Senior captain Frederik Lindqvist sealed the match with a header to score the golden goal

JERSEY CITY, NJ  - The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team recorded its historic eighth consecutive conference victory on Wednesday after topping Manhattan, 2-1, in overtime at Jaroschak Field. Junior midfielder Jordan Jowers and senior defender Frederik Lindqvist each scored to propel the Peacocks over the Jaspers in overtime on Wednesday afternoon, with the latter netting the winner.

The victory — coupled with an Iona loss — secured the program's first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season championship since 2010 and the top seed in the 2019 MAAC Soccer Championship.

Game Notes
  • The two sides battled throughout an evenly-matched first half, with the Jaspers firing off nine shots to the Peacocks' eight, and both squads matching corner kick totals with three apiece.
  • Jowers would give the advantage to the Peacocks in the 51st minute, receiving a beautiful feed from teammate Matt Hoyt, which the junior sent high to the back of the net to give the Peacocks a 1-0 lead early in the second half.
  • However, with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Manhattan's Berti Fourrier put the Jaspers on the board after collecting a loose ball inside the box at the 83rd minute mark to send the match to overtime.
  • The Peacocks held their resolve, though, and in the 95th minute, Lindqvist received a double assist from teammates Jame Davis and Anton Moore, which the senior captain headed past an outstretched Jaspers goalkeeper to give the Peacocks the 2-1 victory.
  • With a Saint Peter's victory and second-place Iona falling to Rider this evening, the Peacocks clinch their first regular season MAAC title since 2010.
