Men’s Soccer Defeats Marist in Overtime Wednesday

Two-goal performance from Dominic Laws helps Peacocks in victory over Red Foxes

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team extended its winning streak to six on Wednesday night with a 3-2 overtime win against Marist in Poughkeepsie. After the host Red Foxes rallied from two goals down, junior Dominic Laws buried the golden goal to propel the Peacocks to victory in the extra session.

Game Notes
  • The two sides were evenly matched for the majority of the game, as neither side found the back of the net through nearly the first hour of action.
  • Then, in the 59th minute, freshman Omar Seghiri was able to slot the ball past an outstretched Marist keeper into the bottom left corner of the goal off the helper from teammate Jamie Davis.
  • Less than 10 minutes later, Laws would follow up with a goal of his own, scoring off an assist from junior midfielder Jordan Jowers in the 67th minute to put the Peacocks up 2-0.
  • The Red Foxes refused to go down without a fight, however, with Huib Achterkamp scoring two quick goals at the 72' and 78', with the latter coming off a penalty kick.
  • With neither team able to score again before the clock struck 90', the game went to overtime.
  • At the 96 minute-mark, Laws would seal the game for the Peacocks following a long assist from Davis, finalizing the 3-2 decision in favor of Saint Peter's.
Inside the Numbers
  • The Peacocks now hold a 6-1-0 record since the start of conference play, which stands as the best start to MAAC play in program history.
  • Saint Peter's has won six consecutive MAAC matches, a feat which has never been done before since the program joined the conference in 1980.
  • Laws' two-goal outing is the junior's third multi-goal game of the season, matching his performances against Fairfield and VMI.
  • Wednesday's match marks the second game in a row in which Davis has recorded two assists, and the sophomore now holds five assists over his last three games.
  • Jowers' assist brings his season total up to four and the junior has gained 12 points for the Peacocks this season.
  • Seghiri's goal marks the freshman's fourth of the season, which is tied for third-most on the team.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Herman Wulff registered five saves on the day while having faced 18 total shots, seven of which being on goal.
Coach's Quotes - Julian Richens
  • "That was a great team-spirited performance. It was a difficult game for both teams with some of the officiating decisions."
  • "This is a tough place to come, so to score three goals away from home shows the application these players are putting in right now - we are proving to be very hard to beat over 90 minutes."
Up Next
