Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Shorthanded Men’s Soccer Stays Atop MAAC Ledger with 3-1 Win over Iona

Peacocks win fifth straight conference match and remain undefeated at home

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Despite playing the majority of the match shorthanded, the Saint Peter's University men's soccer team won its fifth straight match -- all in conference play -- after defeating second-place Iona College, 3-1, on Saturday at Jaroschak Field. Following a scoreless first half, the Peacocks broke a 1-1 deadlock thanks to the heroics of junior Tom Coulson, who netted a pair to lift the home side over the No. 40-ranked Gaels.

Game Notes
  • After nearly an hour of scoreless soccer, sophomore midfielder Jamie Davis sent a free kick into the box from the near sideline to captain Frederick Lindqvist, who headed the ball into the far right side of the net to put the Peacocks up 1-0 at the 65 minute-mark.
  • The Gaels didn't need long to tie it, however, as Josh Plimpton fired a cross from the far side of the field to teammate Lenworth Lopez, who headed the ball slightly to throw off the trajectory of the kick and put it into the net a minute later.
  • The Peacocks were unrelenting though, and Davis would soon collect his second assist on the day, sending yet another free kick into the box from almost the same spot as the prior score to a charging Coulson, who flicked it home to put the Peacocks up, 2-1, in the 75th minute.
  • Coulson would go on to seal the victory for Saint Peter's in the 83rd minute, sending an absolute rocket from about 25 yards out on a free kick that snuck in the upper left corner past the outstretched Iona goalkeeper.
Inside the Numbers
  • Saturday's win marks the fifth consecutive conference win for the Peacocks, who now hold a MAAC record of 5-1-0 to remain atop the conference table.
  • Heading into the match, Iona was ranked 40th in the nation according to ncaa.com, which stands as the second-highest ranked opponent of the season, after No. 22 ranked Rutgers.
  • The Peacocks were playing a man-down for the majority of the conference after receiving a red card in the 39th minute.
  • Saturday's match marks the second game in a row in which Davis has recorded an assist, and his season total now stands at four.
  • Coulson's two-goal performance is the junior's high-mark for the season, and his season total is brought up to five following the match.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Herman Wulff had a strong showing in goal, recording six saves on the day.
  • The Peacocks tallied 17 shots on the day with five finding the mark, while Iona sent 18 shots and seven on goal.
Coach's Quotes - Julian Richens
  • "We have worked incredibly hard today for that result. It was a good MAAC game between two good teams."
  • "We weren't happy with the decision that resulted in us going down to 10 men. We adjusted very quickly and we continued to be a threat for the rest of the game."
  • "To score three goals with 10 men for 60 minutes again highlights our close team spirit, and willingness to come together and fight for results."
Up Next
  • The Peacocks return to the road and travel to Marist next Wednesday (Oct. 23) for a midweek MAAC matchup under the lights at 7 p.m.
