Women’s Volleyball Drops Four-Setter to Manhattan

Peacocks and Jaspers went blow for blow in the four set match

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's University women's volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Manhattan College in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Wednesday night. The Peacocks dropped the match 1-3 (20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 29-31).

Match Notes
  • Saint Peter's and Manhattan exchanged attacks through the set's first 16 points to the tune of six ties and three lead changes. Knotted at 8-8, the Jaspers put together a 7-1 run to snag the set's largest lead for either team. 
  • Manhattan maintained the lead to a 25-20 set win. 
  • The Peacocks answered the call in the second set, only trailing early when the Jaspers went ahead 4-2. Saint Peter's used a pair of kills from Angeleyshka Curbelo and Danielle Lopez, plus an ace by Carolina Ruiz to orchestrate a 5-0 run that put the team ahead 7-4. 
  • The Peacocks road the shoulders of Curbelo's and Alanis Alvarado's combined 10 kills for the rest of the set, leading to a 25-19 edge.
  • Manhattan dominated the third set as the Jaspers never trailed. Although the Peacocks never led, the Peacocks always stayed within a handful of points and eventually dropped the set 19-25.
  • Despite the set loss, Curbelo continued her tear in the third, connecting on a set-high seven total kills in the frame.
  • The fourth frame was an absolute marathon as neither team would give an inch to the opposition. Both teams went point for point producing a whopping 24 ties and 11 lead changes, but the set would end in favor of Manhattan, 31-29, giving the Jaspers a 3-1 match win. 
Inside the Numbers
  • Alvarado and Curbelo combined for 38 kills, recording 19 each, while Lopez and Ruiz  added six kills apiece to the Peacock total. Wildalys Soto handed out 45 assists to lead the team.
  • On the defensive side, Karla Seda led Saint Peter's with a game-high 23 digs. Ruiz followed with 16 digs and Alvarado ended her night with 12 digs to complete a match double-double.
  • The double-double for Alvarado was her seventh of the season.
  • The conference setback for the Peacocks was the eighth straight, dropping the team's MAAC tally to 1-8 on the season.
