Late First Half Run Catapults Peacocks Past Marist at Home

The Peacocks knocked off Marist 72-63 on Sunday Afternoon

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Peacocks used a 19-5 run over the final seven minutes of the first half to knock off Marist 72-63 in the Yanitelli Center on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Peacocks' Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) record to 2-2 on the season.

Game Notes
  • Marist (6-10, 1-3) opened the game with an 8-0 run over Saint Peter's (5-11, 2-2) before Davauhnte Turner hit a 3-pointer to end the run and get the Peacocks on the board.
  • Marist eventually extended the lead 22-11 over the Peacocks, its largest of the game with 11:34 to play in the half.
  • Following a Marist 3-pointer at the 7:05 mark, the Peacocks fell behind 25-15.
  • From that point on in the half, the Peacocks took full control of the game outscoring the Red Foxes, 19-5.
  • The run started with an 11-0 Peacock rally that was completed by Turner scoring seven straight Peacock points to give Saint Peter's its first lead of the afternoon at 26-25 with 2:49 left in the half.  
  • The Peacocks relinquished the lead for a brief moment, but Dallas Watson connected on a 3-pointer from Turner to retake a 29-27 lead, the final lead change in the game.
  • Saint Peter's would take a 34-30 lead into the break after the run.
  • Manny Dixon hit three free throws after being fouled and a transition layup by Turner put the Peacocks up 39-32 to open the second half.
  • Saint Peter's lead would remain at eight points when Samuel Idowu completed a three-point play by putting in a layup and making the free throw to follow.
  • Marist slowly cut into the lead, pulling within one of Saint Peter's with eight minutes to play, but the Peacocks responded, scoring the games next five points, and 9 out of 11 points to extend their lead to 58-51.
  • The Peacocks would buckle down and not let Marist get any closer, pushing the lead to as many as 11 points with 1:56 remaining.
  • The Peacocks would not hit anymore field goals in the contest, but would connect on seven made free throws to seal the 72-63 victory over Marist.  
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Turner scored a game-high 22 points, making a season-high six free throws and matching his season-best of four made 3-pointers.
  • Turner has scored over 20 points in five out of the last six games and it was his eighth 20+ point performance of the season.
  • Quinn Taylor finished the day with nine points, while Watson added eight points
  • Derrick Woods scored six points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in just 11 minutes of action.
  • Marist becomes the fourth straight opponent held under 65 points by the Peacocks defense.  
  • The Peacocks doubled up Marist on the boards, out-rebounding them 40-20.
  • Of the 40 rebounds, 12 came on the offensive glass, leading to 12 second chance points for the Peacocks.
  • Saint Peter's home record improves to a perfect 2-0 in the MAAC and 5-2 overall this season.
  • Brian Parker led Marist in scoring on the day, tallying 17 points.
