Manhattan Slips Past Peacocks in Final Seconds

The Peacocks gave up a game winning shot in the final seconds

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's men's basketball team
suffered its first home Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) defeat of the season, falling to Manhattan, 58-56 on Thursday night.

Game Notes
  • Saint Peter's (5-12, 2-3) and Manhattan (4-11, 2-3) played a defensive first half.
  • The teams tied at 16 and 21 before Manhattan scored the final 9 out of 12 points to end the half.  
  • Early in the second half, the Peacocks fell behind by 10 points, trailing 36-26.
  • The Peacocks continued to trail in the half, but kept the game within two possessions from under 14 minutes on.
  • With 3:27 remaining, Derrick Woods sank two free throws to give the Peacocks their first lead of the night at 50-49.
  • The lead for the Peacocks would only extend to three-points, taking leads of 54-51, and 56-53 with just over one minute to play.
  • Down the final stretch, the Peacocks held on to a one point lead, with less than a minute to play.
  • With just 3 seconds on the clock, Manhattan's Samir Stewart knocked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key, for the go-ahead basket to give Manhattan a 58-56 lead.
  • Following a timeout, Saint Peter's Davauhnte Turner caught the inbounds pass and tossed up a three at the buzzer that missed.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Turner led Peacocks in scoring with 14 points, making 10 out of 11 free throws.
  • Woods followed with a career-high 12 points, going a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity stripe.
  • Quinn Taylor and KC Ndefo each added eight points.
  • Saint Peter's scored 26 points from the free throw line in the game, making 26 of 28.
  • The Peacocks struggled from behind the 3-point line, going a season low 14.3% from the 3-point line, making just two triples on the night.
  • Manhattan was led in scoring by Warren Williams, who tallied a game-high 15 points.
