Women’s Volleyball Visits New York This Week For Three Conference Matches

The Peacocks will take on Manhattan in a midweek meeting before taking on Canisius and Niagara this weekend

Opening Word: 
  • The Saint Peter's University women's volleyball team is on the road this week, with three matches over five days.
  • The team starts the week off against Manhattan on Wednesday, September 19 at 7 p.m.
  • Over the weekend, the Peacocks will play Canisius on Saturday and Niagara on Sunday.
  • Both games this weekend are at 1 p.m. 
  • In non-conference action, Saint Peter's picked up a win against NJIT on August 25th, the program's first win since November 2015, and followed that up with up with their second win of the season against Lafayette College.
  • Freshman Alanis Alvarado leads the team with a total of 155 kills and 171.5 points and Karla Seda has 198 digs in 15 games.
  • Alvarado has also recorded a team-best five double-doubles.
 
Scout/Series History: 
  • The Jaspers are still looking for their first win of the season and currently sit at 0-12.
  • The last time the Peacocks beat Manhattan was October 24, 2009, winning (3-0).
  • Canisius beat Binghamton (3-1) and Milwaukee (3-1) in their non-conference schedule.
  • They later picked up their first MAAC win against Siena, winning (3-1), their only win of the season thus far.
  • The last time the Peacocks beat Canisius was October 2, 2010. 
  • The match on Sunday against Niagara will be the 38th time the Peacocks will face the Purple Eagles.
Up Next
  • The Peacocks return home on September 29 to play Marist at 1 p.m. 
  • The following day, September 30, the team will be up against Siena at the Yanitelli Center at 1 p.m. 
MAAC Weekly Honors   
  • Freshman Alanis Alvarado picked up two awards to start the season, earning Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week the Week of August 27.
Freshman Leading the Flock at Bucknell Invitational 
  • The Peacocks were led by their young freshmen talent at the Bucknell Invitational, the first tournament of the season, giving the program its first win in over two season.
  • Alanis Alvarado led the attack at the invitational, posting a team-high 41 kills (3.42 kills per set), followed by Angeleyshka Curbelo, who was second on the team with 23 kills (1.92 kills per set).
  • Angelee Ng led the sets by posting a team-best 74 assists (6.73 assists per set). She also posted the most service aces on the team with four total.
  • Defensively, Alvarado posted the most digs for the Peacocks, logging 56 (4.67 digs per set).
  • In the winning match against NJIT, Alvarado (21 kills, 29 digs), Curbelo (11 kills, 15 digs), and Ng (41 assists, 17 digs) each posted double-doubles, marking the first time three Peacocks registered double-doubles in a match since November 11, 2015. Alvarado's 20-20 was also the programs first since the same date.
  • Alvarado concluded the invitational by being named to the All-Tournament team.
Puerto Rican's Leading the Flock
  • The Saint Peter's women's volleyball team is the only Division I team in the country with 10 active student-athletes on the roster born in Puerto Rico. 
  • In addition, 70 percent of the Peacocks points this season have been scored by players native to Puerto Rico.
