Men’s Basketball Secures 63-59 Overtime Victory over Maine

The Peacocks defeated Maine in overtime at home for their second win of the season

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Peacocks' return to Jersey City after a four-game road stint, ended with a 63-59 overtime triumph over Maine on Saturday afternoon. The win ended a five-game losing streak for the squad and improved the team's home record to 2-1 on the season, with all three home games ending in an extra period.
 
Game Notes
  • Saint Peter's (2-5) and Maine (0-8) played to seven lead changes and a tie by the under eight-minute media break in the first half.
  • After falling behind 14-13, Cameron Jones' four points helped spark the Peacocks to an 8-0 run, giving Saint Peter's its largest lead of the afternoon at 21-14.
  • Maine responded, outscoring the Peacocks 14-7 over the final five minutes of the half to lock up the game at 28-28 at the break.
  • Samuel Idowu scored eight consecutive points early in the second half to give the Peacocks a 41-36, but again the Black Bears closed in and tied the contest at 41 by the 12-minute media break.
  • Over the next 10 and a half minutes, Saint Peter's and Maine combined to produce eight lead changes and two ties, making it a deadlock at 51-51 with 1:30 to play.
  • Following a Maine missed jumper late in the shot clock, Quinn Taylor grabbed a defensive rebound and the Peacocks called a timeout with 28.6 left.
  • On the final Peacock possession, Davauhnte Turner drove to the basket and kicked it out to Taylor who put up a 3-pointer from the corner that missed with 10 seconds on the clock.
  • Maine's game-winner attempt also came up short with a second on the clock, sending the game into overtime.
  • The Peacocks quickly jumped out to a five-point advantage in the extra frame from a layup by Idowu and a trifecta from Dallas Watson.
  • Following a three-point play by Maine, Klay Brown hit a running jumper and Idowu nailed two free throws to extend the lead to 60-54 with 38 seconds on the clock.
  • Maine would drain a triple to keep the game alive but a steal and fast break drunk from Idowu and a game-clinching free throw by Jones would secure the 63-59 victory.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Idowu stuffed the box score, recording team-highs in points (21), rebounds (6), assists (3), and steals (2), while also blocking a shot.
  • This was the second time this season Idowu scored over 20 points while leading the team in scoring.
  • Jones followed with 17 points, six rebounds, and a pair of assists.
  • Brown matched his career-high of nine points and blocked a Peacock-best three shots in the victory.
  • The Peacocks grabbed 12 offensive rebounds, converting them into 15 points.
  • Overall, the contest had 15 lead changes and eight ties.
  • Saint Peter's has played in overtime in all three home games to start season, which has never happened in the program's history.
