Freshman Briyanah Richardson Erupts for 25 Points to Lead Women’s Basketball Over NJIT In Home Opener

The Peacocks earn their first win of the season beating NJIT 70-57 in the opener

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Freshman point guard Briyanah Richardson had herself a career day in her collegiate debut, going for 25 points and five assists, helping lead the Saint Peter's women's basketball team to a season opening 70-57 win over NJIT.

Game Notes vs. NJIT:
  • The first quarter went back and forth early, but a 8-0 Peacock run after falling behind 10-9, propelled the Peacocks to a 17-10 lead with a minute and a half remaining. 
  • Saint Peter's never looked back from that point on. 
  • NJIT got to within two points late in the second quarter, but an Anna Maguire jumper with .03 ticks left in the half extended the lead to 32-28 at intermission.
  • The third quarter saw the Peacocks take full control of the contest, led by Richardson, who scored six out of eight Saint Peter's points during an 8-0 run that extended the lead to double figures (44-32). 
  • The contest remained in double figures throughout the final quarter, and grew to 17 points midway through, before the Peacocks ended the night with a 13-point victory. 
  • The Peacocks start their season 1-0 with the win, the program's first season opening victory since 2009.
  • The win was also the first Division I win for head coach Marc Mitchell.
Inside The Numbers:
  • Richardson shot 3-5 from behind the arc and 10-19 from the field to finish the game with the 25 points.
  • Wil'lisha Jackson also had a great collegiate debut, finishing with eight rebounds and six points. 
  • D'Aviyon Magazine contributed 11 points against NJIT and snagged four steals. 
  • Freshman Cinnamon Dockery added a team high six steals to help earn the win. 
  • Zoe Pero added four rebounds and six points. 
  • The Peacocks capitalized on the turnovers from the Highlanders, earning 18 points off of 30 turnovers.
Up Next:
  • The Peacocks head to New England to play two games this weekend.
  • On Friday, November 9 the team will play at UMass Lowell at 7 p.m.
  • Then on Sunday, the Peacocks will play Boston College at 4 p.m to conclude the weekend.
