Women’s Volleyball Heads To Florida To Play In The MAAC Championship

Women’s volleyball will begin their postseason play against Marist on Thursday

Opening Word:  
  • The Saint Peter's University women's volleyball team along with the nine other MAAC members begin postseason play in the MAAC Championship on Thursday.
  • The Peacocks' first round match will be against Marist College at 12:30 p.m.
  • The Peacocks picked up their fifth conference win in an upset against Rider University on Sunday, November 10.
  • The Peacocks played Rider at home winning, (3-2) on Senior Day.
  • The Peacocks earned their fourth conference win of the season, knocking off Manhattan in five sets, 3-2 on November 4.
  • Saint Peter's added its third conference win of the season by knocking off Canisius 3-1 on Sunday, October 14.
  • Earlier in the season, the Peacocks picked up sweeps against Manhattan on September 19 and Siena on September 30. 
  • In non-conference action, Saint Peter's earned a win against NJIT on August 25th, the program's first win since November 2015, and followed that up with up with their second win of the season against Lafayette College.
  • Alanis Alvarado is leading the Peacocks with 300 kills this season.
  • In conference only action, Karen Ramiu is second in the MAAC in kills, finishing with 235.
  • Karla Seda has totaled 476 digs this season for the Peacocks.
  • Alexus Sharp is leading the squad in blocks, with 67 for the season.
Scout/Series History: 
  • This will be the third time the Peacocks play Marist this season. 
  • In the first meeting on September 30, Marist swept the Peacocks (0-3).
  • In the second meeting against the Red Foxes, the Peacocks lost (3-1) at Marist. 
  • The last time the Peacocks beat Marist was on September 28, 2008, winning (3-2).
 
Up Next
  • If the Peacocks win, they will advance to the quarterfinal round on Friday, November 16.
  • The tournament uses a reseeding format so the opponent and game time will not be determined until the round concludes. 
MAAC Weekly Honors   
  • Freshman Alanis Alvarado picked up two awards to start the season, earning Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week for the Week of August 27.
  • Freshman Karen Ramiu earned Player of the Week for the week of October 2.
Freshman Leading the Flock at Bucknell Invitational 
  • The Peacocks were led by their young freshmen talent at the Bucknell Invitational, the first tournament of the season, giving the program its first win in over two season.
  • Alanis Alvarado led the attack at the invitational, posting a team-high 41 kills (3.42 kills per set), followed by Angeleyshka Curbelo, who was second on the team with 23 kills (1.92 kills per set).
  • Angelee Ng led the sets by posting a team-best 74 assists (6.73 assists per set). She also posted the most service aces on the team with four total.
  • Defensively, Alvarado posted the most digs for the Peacocks, logging 56 (4.67 digs per set).
  • In the winning match against NJIT, Alvarado (21 kills, 29 digs), Curbelo (11 kills, 15 digs), and Ng (41 assists, 17 digs) each posted double-doubles, marking the first time three Peacocks registered double-doubles in a match since November 11, 2015. Alvarado's 20-20 was also the programs first since the same date.
  • Alvarado concluded the invitational by being named to the All-Tournament team. 
Puerto Rican's Leading the Flock
  • The Saint Peter's women's volleyball team is the only Division I team in the country with 10 active student-athletes on the roster born in Puerto Rico.
