Women’s Soccer Fights to a Draw on Senior Day

Barbara Paiva scored twice for the Peacocks, who finish their season with the tie

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's women's soccer team closed out the 2018-19 season with an epic draw against hOURglass Rival, Rider, on Wednesday. The teams played a full 110 minutes, but neither could get the golden goal, ending the game in a 2-2 tie.

  • With the Peacocks down 2-1 and less than a minute to play, senior Barbara Paiva grabbed the ball from a Rider defender and snuck past the rest of the defense, burying the game-tying goal with 46 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Game Notes
  • Rider (8-5-4, 4-3-3) got on the board first, after Sofia Soares received a free kick and made the shot to the near post in the 29th minute.
  • Paiva evened it up three minutes later, hitting the net near the far post after Alexandria Couto headed the ball, landed on her back and kicked the ball up to Paiva.
  • Rider jumped back out front in the 56th minute, thanks to an Ailis Martin goal.
  • Saint Peter's (3-12-1, 3-6-1) never backed down, and outshot Rider four to two over the next 34 minutes, but the Broncs maintained the lead heading into the final minute.
  • Paiva's second goal of the game in the 90th minute sent the game into overtime with the score knotted at two.
  • Saint Peter's kept their foot on the gas pedal in the first overtime, registering three shots, with none for Rider, but couldn't find the back of the net.
  • Neither team could muster anything in the second overtime period, with only one shot from each team recorded in the final 10 minutes.

  • Paiva recorded her first multi-goal game of the season and third of her career to lead the Peacocks.
  • The senior led all players with six shots and four shots on goal.
  • Paiva finishes her college career with her name all over the Saint Peter's women's soccer record book, sitting in first in shots attempted (117), T-1st for shots on goal (59), fifth in goals (16), T-5th in game-winning goals (4), and eighth in points (34).
  • Couto's dish to Paiva in the first half was her third assist of the season.
  • Saint Peter's outshot Rider 14-12 in the game and eight to seven on goal.
  • The Broncs had six corner kicks to the Peacocks' one.
  • Freshman Stephanie Radakovic logged a career high 25 minutes of action, playing in the second half and both overtimes, setting up multiple shots in all three periods.
  • The Peacocks finish the season with 10 league points, the most in a season for the program since 1998, when the team racked up 18 points.
