Box Score RIVERDALE, NY - Freshman forward Zoe Pero, led the Peacocks posting a double-double in a 57-44 loss against the Manhattan Jaspers Monday Morning. Pero's first career double-double was 17 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Talah Hughes added 14 points and eight rebounds. Saint Peter's drops to an overall record of 3-18 and 2-10 in the MAAC.
"Thought we fought hard to tie the score in the third," said head coach Pat Coyle. "We need players off the bench to contribute solid minutes. Zoe Pero, Sammy Lochner, and Talah Hughes have given us terrific play the past two games. We need the other starters and players coming off the bench to give us better minutes."
The Peacocks came out with high energy as they scored the first two points of the game, which led them to lead the Jaspers 8-7 three minutes into the game. However, two baskets from the Jaspers put them in the lead 12-8. The Peacocks added four more points to the board before Manhattan knocked down a three to end the quarter with a 15-12 advantage.
The Peacocks added the first two points of the second quarter putting them behind the Jaspers, 15-14. Manhattan closed out the quarter on a 12-4 run, leading to a 27-18 halftime.
After Halftime the Jaspers added two points before Pero knocked down four consecutive free-throws putting the Peacocks within five points 29-22. Two power layups by Pero and Hughes put Saint Peter's only three point behind the Jaspers (29-26). Manhattan quickly added three points to keep the lead at 32-26 until Saint Peter's Sam Meier and Hughes closed the gap to 32-30. Sophomore guard, Janelle Mullen, tied the game at 32-32 with two free-throws. A foul by the Peacocks put the Jaspers on the line putting them back in the 34-32.The Peacocks were unable to cut the deficit and added three more points before the Jaspers led 39-35 at the the end of quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Manhattan put together a 10-5 run making it hard for the Peacocks to keep up, gaining a 49-39 lead with under six minutes left. Manhattan held the Peacocks to five more points as they took the game 57-44.
Kayla Grimme led the Jaspers with 27 points and nine rebounds and Maeve Parahus posted 13 points.
The Peacocks will host Marist Friday, February 3 in the Yanitelli Center. Tipoff is scheduled to start at 7pm.
