Men's Soccer Ends In Scoreless Result Against 2012 Patriot League Champions

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Saint Peter's and Lafayette ended in a scoreless draw in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday.

Carlos Suarez (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/St. Benedicts Prep), a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Preseason selection, made 12 saves in the contest for the Peacocks (0-1-1) while Nick Sifrin (Schlangen, Germany/Gymasium Paderborn) had a team-high four shots on the day. Suarez has made 19 saves in two games this season.

Nathan McDonald made four saves for the Leopards (1-0-2) in the contest.

Saint Peter's battled the 2012 Patriot League champions for 110 minutes and came away with the draw. Lafayette outshot the Peacocks 14-11, but both teams had three shots in the two extra sessions.

In the final five minutes of regulation, Saint Peter's had two scoring chances turned away by McDonald. Marcel Maddee' (Berlin, Germany/Gymasium Villa Elizabeth) had hit shot saved with 1:33 left in regulation and Sifrin missed high with 42 ticks on the clock.

Tom McCutcheon gave the Leopards one last chance in regulation, but Suarez was there to make the save in the waning seconds and send the game to overtime. 

In the first overtime, Maddee' missed high 82 seconds into the extra session and Michael Broncati (Petropolis, Brazil/Norwalk [Conn.]) missed wide in the 96th minute while Lafayette's Jeff McLaughlin posted the only shot on goal in the first overtime with 97 seconds left only to Suarez come up big again and send the game onto a second overtime period.

Luke Fairlamb (Northampton, England/Unity College) had a shot attempt close to midfield go wide 23 seconds into the final frame for Saint Peter's only shot in the frame. Suarez added two more stops to his total off the foot of McLaughlin and Nate Arronson in the 109th minute to secure the tie.

It is the first time Saint Peter's  has played consecutive overtime games since 2007. That season the squad also played back-to-back overtime games to start the season after defeating La Salle and Lafayette in overtime on its way to an NCAA Tournament At-Large Bid.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Tuesday for its first road contest at St. Francis Brooklyn. Game time is 7 p.m. and will also be the first-ever game at the Brooklyn Bridge Park.
