Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Saint Peter's University Peacocks (2-27, 2-16 MAAC) match up against the Cansisius College Golden Griffins (11-18, 8-10 MAAC) Thursday afternoon for the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference 2013 Women's Basketball Tournament.
The Peacocks and Golden Griffins split the regular season series; with Canisius coming away with a 62-52 victory in Jersey City, N.J. (1/12), and the Peacocks capturing a 74-65 win in Bufallo, N.Y. (2/07).
Both teams have matched up a total of 51 times, with Saint Peter's holding a 30-21 advantage.
Saint Peter's has faced Canisius in the MAAC tournament four times and is 2-2 in these matchups.
Last year, the Peacocks also met the Golden Griffins in the first round of the tournament, and picked up a 62-57 win in the Mass Mutual Center.
Prior to that, their last meeting was in 2010, when Saint Peter's (eighth seed) dropped a 66-57 decision to the Griffs (ninth seed) in the first round.
Saint Peter's enters tomorrow afternoon's contest following a 57-45 loss to Loyola in their regular season finale last Sunday.
The Peacocks led the Greyhounds 14-8 seven minutes into the opening frame, until the visitors formed a 15-2 run over the following seven minutes to jump in front 23-16. Seven consecutive points from senior Jesika Holmes ((Norwalk, Conn./Hyde Prep) knotted the score at 23, until Loyola netted back to back buckets to head into the half-time break ahead by four. Saint Peter's trailed for the remainder of the contest.
Holmes tied her career-high in the loss, finishing with 18 points, while adding seven rebounds, and six steals. Aziza May (South Euclid, Ohio/Charles F. Brush) also finished in double-figures with 10 points.
Canisius comes in following a 64-53 loss to Siena in their season finale (3/03).
Should the Peacocks defeat Canisius, they will face #7 Iona College in the quarter finals on Friday morning at 9:30 am.
