The Saint Peter's College women's basketball dropped an 87-49 decision to the Marist College Red Foxes Monday evening. The Red Foxes' 87 points, is tied for most the Peahens have surrendered this season (87-50 loss to Akron, 12/3/11). Jynae Judson led the Peahens in scoring with 11 points, rebounds. Freshman Lovisa Hagberg scored a career-high 7 points in the loss. Saint Peter's is now 2-21, 2-10 MAAC, while Marist improves to 16-7, 11-1 MAAC.
The Peahens held onto a 6-2 lead heading into the under-sixteen media timeout, led by Kristal Edward's four points. Five consecutive points by Marist's Kristina Danella gave the hosts their first lead at 7-6, until Lauren Morris drained a three from Jynae Judson to regain a two-point advantage for Saint Peter's. The reigning MAAC Player of the Year, Corielle Yard responded with a trey of her own to put the Red Foxes up by one.
A three-ball by Lauren Morris made the score 10-9, but Marist proceeded to go on a 6-0 run (16-9), capped by a four-point play from Kristina Danella, who drew a foul following a three-point basket. Aziza May broke the Red Foxes' run with a trey, assisted by Kristal Edwards.
That four point deficit would be the lowest for the remainder of the contest, as Marist closed out the first half outscoring Saint Peter's 30-10, to head into the half-time break ahead 46-22.
Marist shot a torrid 66.7% (8-12) from three-point range in the frame, while shooting 59.3% from the floor. Saint Peter's shot just 31%, and went 3-8 (37.5%) from beyond the arc.
Both Kristal Edwards and Aziza May had 6 points in the stanza to pace Saint Peter's, while Corielle Yard led Marist with 11 points.
Marist's 46 points is the most the Peahens have allowed in a frame this season. The last time Saint Peter's allowed 46 points in a half was last year (2/21), when they faced off against the Red Foxes for the second time in the regular season. Marist scored 46 second half points, en route to a 79-38 victory.
Marist's Corielle Yard and Kristina Danella would combine for 18 of the Red Foxes' first 20 points in the second half, to extend the hosts lead to 66-28 (?) at 9:47.
Saint Peter's was held to just 6 points (4 from Jynae Judson) midway through the frame, but scored 21 points in the final six and a half minutes.
The Peahens committed 22 turnovers, which Marist scored 33 points off of.
Overall, Saint Peter's finished with a 31.3% field goal percentage (37.5% from three-point range). Marist shot 53.8% from both the floor and three-point range.
Jynae Judson led Saint Peter's with 13 points, 8 rebounds, while Aziza May added 8 points. Lovisa Hagberg contributed 7 points, shooting a perfect 3-3 from the floor.
Marist's Kristina Danella and Corielle Yard tied for the game-high in points, each scoring 19. The Red Foxes had 5 players in double figures including Danella and Yard. Brandy Gang had 10 points, Casey Dulin added 12 and Briana Holmes finished with 11.
The Peahens return to action this Thursday, as they host Siena at 6pm in the front end of a double-header. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
