This past weekend, the Defending MAAC Champion women's indoor track and field team, as well as the men's indoor track and field team began competition to commence the 2012-13 season. The teams participated in the Manhattan Opener on Saturday, and the CTC Relays on Sunday.
At the Manhattan Opener the Peacock squads showed a glimpse of what to expect for the coming season.
Freshman Jamel Presley, and reliable senior Cristina Vilsaint both qualified for post-season IC4A and ECAC Championships. Presley opened with a 6.6 (6.84c) in the 60m, giving Saint Peter's its first qualifier of the 2013 season.
Vilsaint enjoyed an outstanding series with all throws between 15.50 and 16.33, finishing 2nd overall (55'8). The senior also got off to a solid start in the Shot Put, with a toss of 12.23 meters (40' 1).
Newcomers Ieshawn Johnson and Steve Ferville began their Peacock careers in superb fashion.
Ferville won the 300 meters in 36.1, and Johnson tossed the weight 16.20m.
On Sunday, the Peacocks DMR squad of Lance Weaver, Mohamed Merdan, JP Herrera, and Edwin Young took first at the CTC Relays posting a solid early season time of 10:26.69. They followed that up with a victory in the 4x800 with a time of 8:10.59.
The women's 4x 200 team of Victoria Kundin, Essence Rogers, Latasha Green and Jamelia Johnson took first in a solid 1:44.70
At FDU in Teaneck the 400 runners also took first in the men's event, with Kevin Persson and Jarrek Babb posting identical 50.9 times. Babb also won the 300 in 35.8.
Saint Peter's returns to action next Friday, at Fordham.
