John Marshall

John Marshall is entering his ninth season as the head coach of the men’s and women’s track & field and cross country teams in 2025-26 after his hire in March of 2018.

Prior to his arrival in Jersey City, Marshall spent nearly 20 years as a head and an assistant coach at Villanova, Ursinus College, Seton Hall, and Montclair State. He coached the 1994 Women's Cross Country team and individual national champions while at Villanova and was subsequently honored as the 1994 NCAA Coach of the Year. Marshall has coached 12 NCAA individual champions and over 40 All-Americans. He has won two Big East team championships, and has coached 93 Big East individual champions, 18 IC4A individual champions, 10 ECAC individual champions, and one Rhodes Scholar.

Marshall last served as an assistant coach at Montclair State from 2010-2011. At Montclair State, he was responsible for training and developing middle distance runners.

Prior to Montclair State, Marshall was an assistant at Seton Hall from 2002-2010. While in South Orange, he trained the middle and long-distance runners. Marshall was responsible for coordinating and scheduling the cross country program and monitoring student-athlete academic progress. He also developed track and field camps for youth and high school students, and was the coordinator of youth track and field meets servicing over 800 youth.

Marshall got his start in collegiate coaching in 1992 as an assistant at his alma mater, Villanova. There, he served as the assistant coach for track and field/cross country from 1992-1994 before being elevated to head coach in 1994. As head coach, he led the Wildcats for four seasons until 1998, guiding the program to a national championship in 1994 and coaching two individual national champions in Jen Rhines and Carrie Tollefson. Following his departure from Villanova, Marshall served as the head track and field coach and personal trainer at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA, from 1998-2001.

A 1985 graduate of Villanova, Marshall won an NCAA individual title in the 800-meter during the 1983 indoor championships and was named an All-American six times in the 800 and 4x400 relay team throughout his collegiate career. He still holds the Villanova 800-meter record time of 1:47.84, which he set in 1982. In 1984, Marshall was a member of Team USA at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics. There, Marshall made it to the quarterfinals in the Men's 800-meters. He was also a silver medalist in the USA Championships and a bronze medalist at the World University Games in 1985.

A native of Plainfield, NJ, Marshall is the New Jersey High School record holder in the boys 800-meter, set the 800-meter High School indoor national record, and he was a 2-time representative for the USA in the Junior Pan-American Games, winning the silver medal in 1979 and winning the gold medal in 1981.
